A small microwave is the right microwave for more kitchens than people think: a 0.7 or 0.9 cubic foot box still fits a dinner plate, reheats leftovers and pops popcorn, and it does it in a footprint that leaves counter space in a studio, a dorm, an office or an RV. The things that separate a good compact microwave from a frustrating one are wattage, a turntable big enough for a real plate, a mute button, and controls that do not need the manual. We ranked the compact microwaves in our home and kitchen catalog by output power, interior and turntable size, presets and defrost, build and door design, how loud and how long they last, and by what tens of thousands of owners report after years of daily use.
We have not cooked in every one ourselves; the verdicts rest on the spec sheets and on the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page. For 1.1 cubic foot and larger ovens, inverter models and air fryer combos, see our microwaves guide; for the other small-kitchen workhorse, our toaster ovens guide.
How we picked
- Compact only. Every pick is 0.7 or 0.9 cubic feet; 1.1 and larger went to the main microwave guide.
- Enough power. 700 watts for the 0.7 class and 900 watts for the 0.9 class, since lower outputs make reheating painfully slow.
- A usable plate. We checked turntable diameter; the 0.9 models fit a 10 inch plate, the 0.7 models a standard dinner plate.
- Living with it. Mute buttons, eco standby, child locks and readable displays all counted; retro styling was noted but not ranked above function.
- Owner ratings of 4.2 stars or better, with four picks past 5,000 reviews and two past 15,000.
The picks
COMFEE' Countertop Microwave Oven, 0.7 Cu.Ft, 700W, Black, ECO Mode

The COMFEE 0.7 is the budget compact microwave, and 25,000 owners have reviewed it, more than any other on this page. For the money you get 700 watts with 11 power levels, six auto-cook presets, defrost by weight or time, express buttons, and two features budget boxes usually skip: a mute button that silences every beep with a three-second press and an eco mode that halves standby power by turning off the display. It is small enough to live on a shelf or in a cabinet opening. The compromises are the ones a 0.7 cubic foot, 700 watt box always has: reheating a big bowl takes longer than in a 900 watt oven, a large dinner plate brushes the walls, and the 4.4-star rating reflects a few reports of latch and keypad wear after a couple of years. For a dorm, an office or a first apartment it is the sensible cheap buy.
- 25,000 owner reviews, the most of any compact microwave here
- Mute button and eco mode on a budget box
- Fits in a cabinet or on a shelf
- Six auto-cook presets and express cooking
- 700 W is slow on large portions
- 4.4 stars: some owners report the door latch and keypad wearing
- Small turntable; a large dinner plate touches the walls
Galanz GLCMKA07GNR-07 Retro Microwave Oven, LED Lighting, Pull Handle Design, Child Lock, Surf Green, 0.7 cu ft

The Galanz Retro is the compact microwave people buy because it looks good, and 16,000 owners rating it 4.6 stars say it also works well. Its rounded body, chrome-look pull handle and surf green, red, cream and other finishes make it the one microwave here that a styled kitchen or a dorm room can show off, and the pull handle is a real advantage over the push buttons that stiffen on cheap boxes. Inside it is a straightforward 0.7 cubic foot, 700 watt oven with six power levels, defrost by time or weight, an LED display with clock and timer, an interior light and a child lock. The limits are six power levels rather than ten, 700 watt speed, and three end-of-cycle beeps that cannot be muted, the most common complaint. If looks matter as much as reheating, it is the pick.
- 4.6 stars from 16,000 owners, the highest rating here
- Pull handle instead of a push button, which owners prefer
- Retro colors that suit a styled kitchen or dorm
- Interior light and simple controls
- Only 6 power levels
- 700 W, like the other 0.7 boxes
- Three loud end-of-cycle beeps with no mute
Chefman Countertop Microwave Oven 0.9 Cu. Ft. Digital Stainless Steel Microwave 900 Watt with 6 Presets, Eco Mode, Mute Option, Memory Function, Child Safety Lock, Kitchen, Home, Dorm Essentials

The Chefman 0.9 is the Toshiba’s closest rival and in one respect it is better: multi-stage cooking lets you program a defrost phase followed by a cook phase and press start once, which is a feature usually found on bigger ovens. The rest matches the class leader well, with 900 watts and 10 power levels, six presets, a memory function for your most-used setting, a mute option and an eco mode that darkens the display, all behind a stainless steel front with a child lock. Owners rate it 4.5 stars across 3,200 reviews, the same score as the Toshiba from a smaller sample. The stainless finish collects fingerprints, the presets are the standard six, and the brand has less microwave history. Choose it over the Toshiba if two-stage cooking appeals or if it is cheaper on the day.
- Programs two power and time stages in one cycle
- Mute, eco mode and memory function at a mid price
- 900 W with 10 power levels
- 3,200 owners at 4.5 stars
- Fewer reviews than the Toshiba
- Stainless finish shows fingerprints
- Presets are the usual six; nothing beyond
GE Countertop Microwave Oven | 0.9 Cubic Feet Capacity, 900 Watts | Kitchen Essentials for the Countertop or Dorm Room | Stainless Steel

The GE 0.9 is the compact microwave for people who want an appliance brand rather than a small-appliance brand: it is a plain, well-made 900 watt, 0.9 cubic foot oven with a stainless steel and black glass front that looks like something from a built-in kitchen. Controls are a simple electronic keypad with one-touch Instant On buttons, auto or manual defrost, a kitchen timer, a child lock and a cooking-complete alarm, and the 39 inch cord reaches an outlet most compacts cannot. Owners rate it 4.4 stars across 1,500 reviews. What you give up for the badge is features: there is no mute, no eco mode and a shorter preset list than the Toshiba or Chefman, and it costs more. Buy it for the look and the brand, with GE parts and service behind it.
- GE build and parts support
- Stainless and black glass front looks like a built-in
- 900 W with simple one-touch controls
- 1,500 owners at 4.4 stars
- Costs more than the Toshiba and Chefman for fewer features
- No mute button or eco mode
- Fewer presets than the competition
TOSHIBA Microwave Oven, 0.9 Cu.Ft, 900W, Stainless Steel

The ML-EM09PA is the newer Toshiba 0.9 and a good alternative if the EM925A5A is out of stock or pricier on the day. It keeps the 900 watt output and the 10.6 inch turntable that fits a 10 inch plate, adds an eleventh power level, has six auto menus, defrost by weight or time, one-touch cooking from one to six minutes, a mute function, LED lighting and a stainless front, and the whole box is a touch more compact at 18.7 inches wide. Owners rate it 4.5 stars across 1,100 reviews. The two-step child lock trips up some new owners who think the keypad is dead, there is no eco mode on the spec sheet, and it does not yet have the long track record of its sibling. Functionally it is the same excellent compact microwave.
- Newer Toshiba with 11 power levels and a mute function
- 10.6 inch turntable in a slightly smaller box than the EM925A5A
- Stainless front, LED light
- 4.5 stars from 1,100 owners
- Fewer reviews than the EM925A5A
- Two-step child lock confuses some owners out of the box
- No eco mode listed

0.7 or 0.9 cubic feet?
The difference is bigger than the numbers suggest. A 0.7 cubic foot oven (COMFEE, Galanz) has a turntable around 10 inches and an interior that takes a standard dinner plate with little room to spare; it runs at 700 watts, so a bowl of soup takes a minute longer than in a 900 watt box. A 0.9 cubic foot oven (Toshiba, Chefman, GE, Black+Decker) has a 10.6 inch turntable that fits a 10 inch frozen pizza or a large plate and 900 watts that reheats noticeably faster, in a box only an inch or two bigger on the outside. If the microwave will be your main cooking appliance, as in a dorm or a studio, buy the 0.9. If it is for an office, an RV or a second kitchen where a mug and a plate are the jobs, the 0.7 saves money and space.
Features worth paying for
A mute button is the feature owners mention most, and it is why the Toshibas, Chefman and both COMFEEs outrank the beeping Galanz for daily use. Eco mode turns off the clock display on standby and matters in a bedroom or a dorm. Ten or eleven power levels (every pick but the Galanz) let you soften butter or defrost gently; six levels are coarse. Defrost by weight is more reliable than by time. Multi-stage cooking (Chefman) and memory functions (Chefman, Black+Decker) are nice but not essential. A pull handle (Galanz) outlasts a push-button door on a cheap oven. And check the cord: the GE has a long 39 inch cord, while several compacts have short ones that dictate where the oven sits.
Where to put it and how long it lasts
Every microwave here needs a few inches of clearance at the back and top for the vents; the 0.7 COMFEE is small enough for a cabinet opening, but do not seal any of them in. Compact microwaves are budget appliances and the owner reviews are honest about lifespan: three to six years of daily use is typical, with door latches and keypads the usual failure points, which is where the pull-handle Galanz and the GE build have an edge. For a kitchen that wants more than reheating, an air fryer toaster oven does the crisping a microwave cannot, and for a small-space rice habit our small rice cookers guide covers 2 to 4 cup models.
Is a 0.7 cubic foot microwave big enough?
For a mug, a bowl and a standard dinner plate, yes. A 10 inch frozen pizza or a large casserole dish will not fit; for those buy a 0.9 cubic foot oven, which has a 10.6 inch turntable.
Is 700 watts enough for a microwave?
It works, but it is slow. A 700 watt oven takes roughly 20 to 30 percent longer than a 900 watt one, and package instructions are usually written for 1,000 watts or more, so add time. If you reheat full meals daily, the 900 watt models are worth it.
Which small microwave is the quietest?
The Toshiba EM925A5A, Toshiba ML-EM09PA, Chefman 0.9 and both COMFEE models have a mute button that silences the beeps. The Galanz Retro cannot be muted and gives three loud beeps at the end of each cycle.
Can I put a compact microwave in a cabinet?
Only with clearance. Leave several inches at the back and above for the vents and never block them; sealed in, the oven overheats and fails early. A cabinet with an open front and back works; a closed cupboard does not.
Why is my microwave keypad not responding?
Most compacts here have a two-step child lock that activates after a few seconds idle or after a long press. Check the manual for the unlock sequence before assuming a fault; it is the most common support question for these models.
