Best Carry-On Luggage in 2026: 5 Cabin Bags Compared by Size, Weight and Owner Reviews

Five carry-on bags compared on listed size, weight and owner ratings: Coolife 20-inch hardside, Travelers Club Chicago, LEVEL8 polycarbonate, Samsonite Underseat spinner and U.S. Traveler Rio.

Our top pickCoolife Carry On Luggage Hardside Suitca…9.0Our score

Carry-on luggage is sold on two promises: it fits in the overhead bin, and it survives being dragged through an airport. The second is hard to judge from a product page. The first is printed right there in the dimensions, and the numbers are less tidy than the words “airline approved” suggest.

The short answer: the Coolife 20-inch Hardside Carry-On is our top pick. It has a built-in TSA lock, YKK zippers, spinner wheels and a two-year warranty, weighs 7 pounds, and is rated 4.5 stars by nearly 6,000 owners. It suits the traveler who flies a few times a year and wants one dependable case at a moderate price. If you travel weekly, the polycarbonate LEVEL8 is the step up.

Our fashion catalog lists 66 products under carry-ons, suitcases and luggage sets. Many are checked sizes, sets or covers, so we narrowed the field to cabin-size bags and kept five. We have not rolled these through a terminal. Our data holds their specifications, ratings and review counts but no review text, so this is a comparison of published figures, not a durability test. Prices change daily and are not printed; every button opens the live Amazon page.

How we picked

  • Cabin sizes only. Each pick is the carry-on or underseat version of its listing, not the 24 or 28-inch checked case that often shares the page.
  • Five different designs. Two hardside price levels, a premium polycarbonate case, a softside two-wheeler and an underseat roller.
  • Owner ratings of 4.2 stars or higher, from 2,253 ratings at the low end to more than 38,000 at the high end.
  • Dimensions and weight from the listing. We quote the outer size each maker publishes and compare it with the common 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit.

Coolife Carry On Luggage Hardside Suitcase with Spinner Wheels, 20in
Size21.7 x 15 x 8.5 in with wheels (body 19.13 x 13.46 x 8.62 in)Weight7 lbCapacity38 LShellABS + PC hardsideLockBuilt-in TSA lockWarranty2 years (listing)

The Coolife does the ordinary things properly. The shell is an ABS and polycarbonate blend, the zippers are made by YKK, and the lock is a built-in TSA type, so security staff can open it without breaking anything. It rolls on 360-degree spinner wheels and the aluminum handle locks at three heights. Inside, both halves are lined, with a divider and storage pockets. Coolife gives the outer size as 21.7 x 15 x 8.5 inches including wheels, and the case body alone as 19.13 x 13.46 x 8.62 inches; it says the case fits the limits of many major airlines while asking you to check. The width with wheels is the figure to watch on stricter carriers.

Pros
  • Built-in TSA lock and custom YKK zippers
  • Spinner wheels and a three-level aluminum handle
  • Two-year manufacturer warranty stated in the listing
  • 4.5 stars from 5,981 owners
Cons
  • 15 inches wide including wheels, an inch over the common 14-inch limit
  • No expansion zipper mentioned
  • The spec table says polycarbonate while the description says ABS + PC

#28.6Our score
Travelers Club Chicago Hardside Expandable Spinner Luggage, 22 inch Carry-On
Size22 x 13.5 x 11 in (spec table)Weight2.55 kg (about 5.6 lb)Capacity47 LShellABS hardside, expandableWheels4 spinner wheels

More than 38,000 ratings make the Chicago the most reviewed cabin-size case in our catalog, at an average of 4.3 stars. It is a plain ABS hardside with four spinner wheels, a push-button telescoping handle and an expansion zipper. The spec table gives 47 litres and 2.55 kilograms, which makes it both the roomiest and one of the lightest picks. The catch is depth: the table lists 22 x 13.5 x 11 inches, two inches more than most airlines print. The listing does not say whether that is the expanded figure, so assume it may need to stay zipped down on a full flight.

Pros
  • 47 litres, the largest capacity of the cabin cases here
  • Expands for extra room on the way home
  • Light at 2.55 kg
  • 38,218 owner ratings, the most on this page
Cons
  • The listed 11-inch depth is over the usual 9-inch limit
  • 4.3 stars, below the Coolife and LEVEL8
  • ABS only, with no polycarbonate in the shell

LEVEL8 Hard Shell 20 Inch Carry on Luggage Airline Approved, Polycarbonate
Size21.5 x 14.5 x 9.2 in with wheels and handlesWeight7.7 lbCapacity40 LShell3-layer polycarbonateWheels8 spinner wheelsLockTSA-approved combination lock

The LEVEL8 is what you buy when the case will be used every other week. The shell is three-layer polycarbonate, the wheels are eight-wheel spinners described as quiet, and the aluminum handle stops at four heights. There are grab handles on the top and side and bumper feet so it can lie flat without scuffing. The interior splits into two lined halves with zipped mesh pockets. LEVEL8 publishes 21.5 x 14.5 x 9.2 inches including wheels and handles, 7.7 pounds and 40 litres, and suggests it for trips of one to four days. Its 4.6 stars is the best rating here, though from a smaller sample of 2,253 owners, and it cost more than twice the Coolife in our data at the time of writing.

Pros
  • Full polycarbonate shell in three layers
  • Eight quiet spinner wheels and a four-level aluminum handle
  • Top and side grab handles plus side bumper feet
  • 4.6 stars, the highest rating here
Cons
  • The highest price of the five at the time of writing
  • 7.7 lb, the heaviest pick
  • Fewest ratings on this page at 2,253

Size16.5 x 13.5 x 9 inWeight2.5 kg (about 5.5 lb)ShellPolyester softsideWheels4 spinner wheelsLaptopPadded compartment, up to 13.3 inExtrasUSB port, 6 pockets

An underseat bag solves two problems: you never fight for bin space, and on many fares a bag this size counts as the personal item. Samsonite’s version is a small polyester case, 16.5 x 13.5 x 9 inches, on four spinner wheels with a push-button locking handle. The main compartment has a padded section for a laptop up to 13.3 inches, there are quick-stash pockets on the outside, and a USB port lets you charge a phone from a power bank stored inside; the battery is not supplied. Samsonite says it fits under most airline seats and adds that seat space varies, so check yours.

Pros
  • Sized to go under most airline seats
  • Padded compartment for laptops up to 13.3 inches
  • USB port on the outside for a power bank you supply
  • 7,180 owner ratings at 4.4 stars

U.S. Traveler Rio Lightweight Softside Rolling Carry-on Suitcase, 2-Wheel Set
Size21 x 13.5 x 7.5 in, expands 2 inWeight6.6 lbCapacity34.84 LShell1200D polyester, EVA front paddingWheels2 in-line wheelsIncludedMatching 14 in tote

The Rio is the old-school carry-on: soft polyester and two wheels. The 1200-denier fabric has EVA padding in the front panel, the interior is fully lined with mesh zip pockets and compression straps, and a gusset adds two inches when you need it. The case measures 21 x 13.5 x 7.5 inches, the slimmest full-size pick here, and the set includes a 14 x 9.5 x 5 inch tote that loops over the handle. It rolls on two corner-protected in-line wheels with a telescoping handle. At 4.2 stars from more than 36,000 owners it is the lowest-rated pick, and the maker’s own advice to load heavy items at the bottom tells you a two-wheeler can tip. It was also the least expensive bag here in our data.

Pros
  • Within 22 x 14 x 9 on the listed figures when not expanded
  • Matching tote with a loop that fits over the handle
  • Expands by 2 inches
  • 36,221 owner ratings, and the lowest price here at the time of writing
Cons
  • 4.2 stars, the lowest rating of the five
  • Two wheels: it must be tilted and pulled
  • The listing itself warns to pack heavy items low to stop it tipping

What to look for in a carry-on

The real outer size. The limit quoted most often by US airlines is 22 x 14 x 9 inches including wheels and handles. Put the five listings next to that box and only two sit fully inside it: the Samsonite underseat bag and the U.S. Traveler Rio when it is not expanded. The LEVEL8 is over by half an inch in width and a fraction in depth, the Coolife by an inch in width once the wheels are counted (its body alone is under 14 inches), and the Travelers Club by two inches in depth on the spec table. Enforcement varies by airline and by gate, and an “airline approved” label is the maker’s claim, not the airline’s.

Hard or soft. A hard shell keeps its shape, shrugs off rain and protects what is inside, but it opens like a clamshell and needs floor space for both halves. A soft case has outside pockets, gives a little when the bin is tight and opens from the top.

ABS or polycarbonate. ABS is the cheaper plastic and is what the Travelers Club uses. Polycarbonate costs more and flexes under impact instead of cracking, which is why it appears in the LEVEL8 and, blended with ABS, in the Coolife.

Two wheels or four. Spinner wheels let a case glide upright beside you, which is kinder on the wrist in a long queue. With two in-line wheels you tilt the case and carry part of its weight as you pull.

Weight. Some airlines weigh cabin bags. The picks here run from about 5.5 to 7.7 pounds empty.

Locks. A TSA-accepted lock can be opened by security with a master key. The Coolife and LEVEL8 listings state one. The spec tables for the others mention a combination or key lock without saying it is a TSA type.

What size carry-on fits in the overhead bin?

Most US airlines publish a limit close to 22 x 14 x 9 inches including wheels and handles; some international and low-cost carriers allow less. On the listed figures, the U.S. Traveler Rio (21 x 13.5 x 7.5 inches unexpanded) is inside that box, while the Coolife, LEVEL8 and Travelers Club each exceed it in one dimension. Check your airline before you buy.

Does an underseat bag count as a personal item?

Often, but it depends on the airline. Samsonite says its 16.5 x 13.5 x 9 inch Underseat Spinner fits under most airline seats and is small enough to count as a personal item, and it also tells buyers to check with the airline because under-seat space varies.

Which of these carry-ons has a laptop compartment?

Only the Samsonite Underseat Spinner, which has a padded compartment for a laptop up to 13.3 inches. The three hardside picks and the U.S. Traveler Rio do not list a laptop pocket in our data.

Which of these carry-ons have a TSA lock?

The Coolife listing states a built-in TSA lock and the LEVEL8 listing a TSA-approved combination lock. For the Travelers Club, Samsonite and U.S. Traveler bags, our data shows a lock type in the spec table but no TSA statement.

Can I get matching checked luggage?

Yes for four of the five. Coolife sells 24 and 28-inch cases and three-piece sets on the same listing, LEVEL8 sells 24 and 28-inch cases and sets, Travelers Club offers three and five-piece Chicago sets, and the U.S. Traveler Rio comes as a two-piece set with a tote.

Bottom line

The Coolife 20-inch Hardside gives most travelers what they need: a TSA lock, YKK zippers, spinner wheels and a two-year warranty at a moderate price. Spend more on the LEVEL8 for a full polycarbonate shell, save with the Travelers Club Chicago or the softside U.S. Traveler Rio, and choose the Samsonite Underseat Spinner if you would rather never lift a bag over your head.
