Accessible approach to strength training and diet

Casey has summarized her take on strength training in a compelling personal narrative. Information from her years worth of articles are available in this single volume. I highly recommend reading both this book and looking up her articles on strength training, both have helped my relationships with food, my body, and exercise. Thanks Casey!

Good read

This book is written as a memoir. The author provides unique and thoughtful insights on a topic I can relate to. She injects humor into her writing as well, which makes for a pleasant read.

A Powerful Motivator

A very instructive book! Writing from personal experience and using science to make a case in an easy-to-understand manner, the author compelled me to stop thinking about weightlifting, which I'd done for decades, and to start doing it.

Highly recommend for anyone questioning diet culture

As a fan of Casey Johnston's "She's A Beast" newsletter in which she again and again reveals how the diet and wellness industry is doing everyone a disservice, of course I pounced on her memoir, _A Physical Education: How I Escaped Diet Culture and Gained the Power of Lifting._ Johnston details several years of her life, during which she ditched her toxic cardio and eating habits--kicking and screaming--and discovered the joys of strength training. In her typical journalistic style, Johnston also examines sources ranging from pop culture, to self-help books, to scientific journals, to--in an e

good read if you are less than muscle bound.

The author seems more preoccupied with being a girl in a man's universe. Some good pointers but more directed toward a woman's experience in a mostly men's gym. As a senior male it had some application (pumping iron with overstuffed gym junkies) in that Mr. Muscle can be intimidating, when you aren't in the best shape of your life.

Important read

Happy I purchased this instead of waiting for it from my library. A relatable experience of disordered eating and body obsession, and most importantly a hopeful path out. Humorous. Appreciate the shorter chapters to digest in small bits. I will share this with friends for sure.

Self-discovery and rebirth meet fitness and multiple kinds of strength

Casey lays bare a lot of emotional scars in this powerful journey of self-discovery and a kind of rebirth. Her journalistic research cites sources for some of her learning, while a host of personal anecdotes paint a path of forgiveness (mostly to herself) from the shame that victims of abuse often suffer for years or even a lifetime. The author learns a great deal about strength in all its forms, and I cheered for her successes and felt compassion for her “failures” throughout this book. While some might find the thoughtful, non-sequential cadence of this memoir less relatable than a more ordin

Very Grateful for This Book

Reading this book felt like talking to a friend who really, honestly gets it. Although we don't agree on everything (I do love to run, and I absolutely adore deadlifts) but our core experience is so similar that I felt really empowered and enlightened reading this. This book inspired me to start my own weightlifting journey. I am three weeks in now, and my life has changed so dramatically!! I am happier, sleep better, my hot flashes have basically stopped, and I look and feel amazing. I cannot believe what I am capable of. Thank you for this book, Casey, you have truly saved a life.
