This is a good basic sewing machine for people who never intend to embroider, quilt, or do anything fancy on their machine. I originally ordered a heavy duty model but even basic tasks seemed to require a number of choices and tasks. I also like the needle threader. It has taken me some time to figure it out since I essentially had to rely on a picture to figure out how to work.I do have a major complaint about Singer machines though. I'm a newbie to sewing, so I can't add to the wealth of reviews offered by experienced sewing enthusiasts -that really helped me choose this machine, thank you very much - but I can give kudos to the seller and shipper which was Blink Art supplies in both instances. VERY disappointed! This machine was squirrely from the start. The bobbin would not work and rise properly. The machine winds the bobbin very poorly, knotting it up, not winding smoothly onto the bobbin. It starts winding nicely, then goes crazy. The spindle for the top thread does not stay in position. It drops down. The spindle should rise up to a vertical position instead of leaning to the side, which can cause the spool to slide off, but unfortunately they are all like this now. I did NOT want to buy a new machine, but my 40 year old Singer bit the dust. I read reviews and was so reluctant to purchase based on some of the negative ones. But I needed a machine! I've been sewing clothing, curtains, quilts, etc. for 50 years but I'm not a professional seamstress, so I didn't want a machine with lots of bells and whistles - I wanted my old machine back! My daughter was 9 when she started using it. She took classes last winter and this was a birthday gift from her grandmother, who sews too. This machine is a lot faster than the one she learned on at the class. So if its for a beginner, note its fast LOL. But she enjoys using it and makes lots of things from the patterns I buy online.
