Mickey Rooney, Tom Drake, Betty Garrett, Janet Leigh, and a host of top musical performers headline M-G-M producer Arthur Freed's extravagant biographical tribute to the prolific songwriting duo of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. In the early 1920s, the diminutive Hart (Rooney) teams up with Rodgers (Drake) to launch a successful 24-year music career, penning nearly 500 songs with him until Hart's death in 1943 at the age of 47. Rodgers marries his dream girl (Leigh) while Hart pines after Peggy (Garrett), eventually spiraling into depression and death after her rejection.
June Allyson, Perry Como, Ann Sothern, Mel Torme, Cyd Charisse, Judy Garland, and Lena Horne are just some of the singing sensations featured. The storyline is weak, buy the Technicolor and numbers are wonderful. The high point of the movie is Micky Rooney performing with Judy Garland and Lena Horne. They don't make them like this anymore. The sound is improved as well. I highly recommend it.
Great Disc. The Film is packed with so much talent together. The story is fabricated Biography of Rogers and Hart, made to be able to pass the production code. I watch it for so many classic performances.The pinnacle is the Slaughter on Tenth Ave Ballet. Incredible legacy.
The story line is really weak, and almost comical. Mickey Rooney overplays his role as Lorenz Hart and Tom Drake acts like a wood statue as Richard Rodgers. It is the appearances by some of MGM's biggest musical talents that makes this film worthwhile - Ann Sothern, Judy Garland, Lena Horne and more.
