Best Camping Gear Under $50 in 2026: Budget Coolers, Water Filters, Burners and Campsite Games Ranked by Owners

Eight budget camping picks ranked by use, build and owner reviews: Titan Zipperless cooler, GasOne burner, Purewell pump, filter straw, pocket filter, GoSports and Amazon Basics ladder toss, Franklin.

Our top pickTitan Zipperless HardBody Cooler, Keeps …9.2Our score

Most of what makes a weekend at a campsite go well costs less than a tank of gas. A cooler that keeps the milk cold for two days, a burner that boils a pot in minutes, a filter that turns stream water into drinking water, and something to do between dinner and dark. We went through our sports and outdoors catalog for the camping, hiking and campsite gear that was at or under $50 at the time of writing, then ranked it by how much use it gets on a real trip, build and materials, pack size and weight, and what thousands of owners report after a season of trips.

We have not camped with every one of these ourselves; the verdicts rest on the spec sheets and on the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change daily, so a pick that was under the cap when we wrote this may drift above it; every button opens the live Amazon page. For the stove itself, our camping stoves guide covers the full range, and the portable jump starters guide covers the one thing you want in the car when the trip ends. Do Best Deal keeps this list to products with a real owner track record rather than the cheapest thing on the page.

How we picked

  • Under the cap. Every pick was at or under $50 in our catalog at the time of writing; several are well under $25.
  • Useful on a real trip. Food, water, cooking and campsite downtime, not gadgets that get used once.
  • Materials that last. Insulated shells with hard liners, cast iron burner heads, hollow-fiber filter membranes and thick PVC game frames rather than thin plastic.
  • Packs down. Each pick folds, collapses or comes with a carry case, because trunk space is the real limit on a car-camping trip.
  • Owner feedback across at least several hundred reviews, most in the thousands, with a rating of 4.4 or better in most cases; the one exception is marked.

Titan Zipperless HardBody Cooler, Keeps Ice 2 Days
CapacityHolds up to 9 cansIce retentionUp to 2 days (Deep Freeze insulation with radiant heat barrier)LidPatented flip-open Zipperless lidLinerRemovable HardBody liner with SmartShelfCarryAdjustable Backsaver shoulder strap with anti-slip padOwner ratingan excellent owner rating across tens of thousands of owner reviews

The Titan Zipperless is the cooler to buy for a day hike, a picnic, a tailgate or two people car camping, and tens of thousands of owners agree, giving it an excellent owner rating. The trick is the lid: instead of a zipper that jams with sand and breaks after a season, it flips open and shut on a patented hinge, and underneath is a removable hard liner with a shelf so sandwiches sit above the ice and cans instead of under them. Deep Freeze insulation with a radiant heat barrier keeps ice for up to two days in Titan’s testing; owners say that holds up in shade with pre-chilled contents and drops in direct sun. The shell is water and stain repellent and wipes clean. It holds nine cans, which is the honest limit: it is a personal or couples cooler, not the one that feeds a family of five for a weekend.

Pros
  • Tens of thousands of owner reviews, with an excellent owner rating, the most-trusted item on this page
  • Hard liner and SmartShelf keep soft food from being crushed
  • Zipperless lid opens one-handed and does not jam with sand
  • Water and stain repellent shell wipes clean
Cons
  • Nine cans is a day-trip or two-person size, not a family cooler
  • Two-day ice claim assumes shade and pre-chilled contents
  • Shoulder strap only; no backpack straps

GasOne High Pressure Single Propane Burner - Outdoor Cooking with Heat Shield and Guard - Propane Burner Head for Camping, Tailgating, Seafood Boil, Home Brewing - Patented
TypeHigh-pressure single propane burnerBurner headCast ironProtectionTop heat guard and bottom heat shieldHoseHigh-quality hose assembly includedUsesCamping, tailgating, seafood boils, home brewingOwner ratingan excellent owner rating across thousands of owner reviews

The GasOne is the burner for car campers who cook real meals: a high-pressure propane burner with a cast iron head and a heavy-duty metal frame that throws far more heat than a canister stove, so a big pot of water, a seafood boil or a cast iron skillet gets hot fast. A top heat guard protects against oil spills and keeps the flame off the hose connection, a bottom shield protects the frame, and GasOne includes a proper hose assembly. Thousands of owner reviews give it an excellent owner rating. It is not subtle: a single high-output burner is better at boiling than simmering, it runs off a 20 pound propane tank rather than a canister, and it weighs enough that it lives in the trunk, not a backpack. For the campsite kitchen, tailgating and home brewing it is the best value cooker in the catalog.

Pros
  • Cast iron burner head and metal frame for the price of a backpacking stove
  • High-output flame boils a large pot fast
  • Heat guard keeps spills and flame away from the hose connection
  • Runs off a standard propane tank, cheaper than canisters
Cons
  • Needs a 20 lb propane tank, so it is car camping only
  • Single burner; no simmer finesse
  • Heavy and bulky compared with a canister stove

Purewell Water Hand Purifier Pump with Replaceable Carbon 0.01 Micron Water, Stages, Portable Outdoor Emergency and Survival Gear - Camping, Hiking, Backpacking(Green)
Filtration4 stages: 0.01 micron hollow fiber UF, activated carbon fiber, coconut carbon rod, PP cottonFlow rateUp to 1,400 ml per minuteCapacityUp to 3,000 L before carbon replacementTestingPassed SGS and NSF/ANSI laboratory tests per makerGripRubber side and base pads for stable pumpingOwner ratinga strong owner rating across hundreds of owner reviews

A straw filter keeps one person alive; a pump filter feeds a camp. The Purewell pump pushes lake or stream water through a 0.01 micron hollow fiber membrane, activated carbon fiber, a coconut shell carbon rod and a cotton prefilter at up to 1,400 ml a minute, so filling a pot for dinner takes a couple of minutes rather than a long session of sucking through a straw. Rubber pads on the sides and base keep it planted while you pump, the carbon element is replaceable and good for about 3,000 liters, and the maker reports SGS and NSF/ANSI lab testing. Hundreds of owner reviews give it a strong owner rating. It is bulkier than a straw, so backpackers counting ounces will prefer the two picks below, and the carbon needs replacing on schedule for taste. For car camping, a cabin or an emergency kit, it is the right filter.

Pros
  • Pumps a liter in under a minute, far faster than a straw
  • Four-stage filtration with replaceable carbon
  • Fills bottles and pots, so it works for a group
  • Works without electricity for emergencies at home too
Cons
  • Bulkier and heavier than a straw filter
  • Hundreds of reviews, not thousands
  • Carbon element must be replaced on schedule to keep taste

Emergency Water Filter Straw, Personal Survival Water Filtration System, Water Purifier, Outdoor Survival Gear and Equipment for Hiking Camping Accessories Cycling Fishing Preparedness
TypePersonal filter strawMaterialBPA-free ABS, triple filtration testedFlow rateAbout 800 ml per minuteCapacityAbout 1,300 gallonsWeightUnder 1.8 ozOwner ratingan excellent owner rating across hundreds of owner reviews

The filter straw is the cheapest insurance on this page: under 1.8 ounces, it lives in a pack pocket or clips to a strap and lets you drink from a stream, a lake or a filled bottle when the carried water runs out. The maker reports triple filtration testing before shipping, a flow of about 800 ml a minute, and a lifetime capacity of around 1,300 gallons, which is years of weekend trips. Hundreds of owner reviews give it an excellent owner rating. It is a personal device, so it cannot fill a pot for cooking or a bottle for a child, and the listing does not state a micron rating the way the Purewell and pocket filter do. As a backup for a day hike, a bike ride or the glove box, it is hard to beat at this price.

Pros
  • Under two ounces and fits a pocket or a pack strap
  • Drinks straight from the source or through a bottle
  • High lifetime capacity for the price of a sandwich
  • An excellent owner rating from hundreds of owners
Cons
  • One person at a time; no way to fill a pot
  • Hundreds of reviews rather than thousands
  • Micron rating is not stated on the listing

Pocket Water Filter Survival 0.01 Micron Water Purifier Emergency Survival Gear for Drinking Backpacking Hiking Camping Outdoor Filtration
FiltrationSediment prefilter, 0.01 micron membrane, activated carbon fiberFlow rateAbout 500 ml per minuteCapacity4,000 L, SGS certificated per makerHandleCollapsible pump handleOutputDirect, into a bottle or into a hydration packOwner ratinga strong owner rating across hundreds of owner reviews

The pocket pump filter sits between the straw and the Purewell: it has a collapsible handle so it packs like a straw, but it pumps, so you can fill a bottle or a hydration bladder rather than drinking from the source on your knees. Triple filtration runs a sediment prefilter, a 0.01 micron membrane and activated carbon fiber, flow is about 500 ml a minute, and the maker claims 4,000 liters of capacity with SGS certification and a lifetime warranty. Hundreds of owner reviews give it a strong owner rating. It is slower than the full-size pump, has the smallest review base here, and replacement elements are easier to find for the bigger brands. For a backpacker who wants pump convenience without pump bulk, it is the pick.

Pros
  • A pump filter that collapses to pocket size
  • Fills bottles and hydration bladders, unlike a straw
  • 0.01 micron membrane plus carbon for taste
  • Lifetime warranty per the listing
Cons
  • Slower than the full-size Purewell pump
  • Smallest review base on the page
  • Replacement filter sourcing is less certain than big brands

GoSports Ladder Toss Indoor & Outdoor Game Set with 6 Soft Rubber Bolo Balls and Travel Carrying Case - Choose Pro or Classic
Includes2 targets with score trackers, 6 rubber bolos, carry case, rulesFrameHigh-gloss PVC, 50 percent thicker than economy sets, pre-gluedAssemblyUnder 2 minutesBolosSoft rubber on thick rope to limit tanglesUseCampsites, tailgates, cookouts, indoorsOwner ratingan excellent owner rating across tens of thousands of owner reviews

Ladder toss is the campsite game that works for a six-year-old and a grandparent, and the GoSports set is the one tens of thousands of owners have bought, rating it excellent. The PVC frames are 50 percent thicker than the economy sets and come pre-glued, so setup is under two minutes, and each target has a built-in score tracker so nobody argues. The six bolos are soft rubber on thick rope that tangles less than the cheap versions, which makes them safe to throw near tents and children, and everything packs into the included carry case. It is bulky even packed, and on hard-packed ground the rubber bolos can bounce off rather than wrap, so pick a grassy pitch. The listing offers a Pro and a Classic version; check which one is in the cart.

Pros
  • Tens of thousands of owner reviews, with an excellent owner rating
  • Pre-glued PVC sets up in two minutes and breaks down into the case
  • Soft rubber bolos are safe around kids and tents
  • Built-in score trackers
Cons
  • Takes real trunk space even in the case
  • Rubber bolos can bounce off hard ground
  • Pro version costs more; check which you are buying

Amazon Basics Portable Ladder Toss Outdoor Game Set with Carrying Case, Simple to Assemble, Red/Blue
Includes2 ladder targets, 3 blue and 3 red bolas, carry caseFramePVC pipe, 22 x 26 x 38 in each targetPlayers2 to 4, ages 14 and upAssemblySimple, lightweightColorsRed and blueOwner ratingan excellent owner rating across thousands of owner reviews

If the GoSports price is more than you want to spend on a lawn game, the Amazon Basics ladder toss is the same game for less. Two PVC targets measure 22 by 26 by 38 inches each, there are three blue and three red bolas, and the carry case makes it an easy throw-in for a camping trip or a tailgate. Thousands of owner reviews give it an excellent owner rating, with most of the praise going to the price and the quick assembly. The compromises are the thinner PVC pipe, no score trackers, and bolas that are harder than the GoSports soft rubber ones, which is why Amazon rates it for ages 14 and up. For adults and teens at a campsite it is fine; for a family with young children, spend the extra on the GoSports.

Pros
  • Same game as the GoSports for less money
  • Lightweight and comes with a case
  • Thousands of owner reviews, with an excellent owner rating
  • Color-coded bolas for easy scoring
Cons
  • Thinner PVC than the GoSports
  • No score trackers
  • Rated for 14 and up by Amazon; the bolas are hard, not soft rubber

Franklin Sports Outdoor Fun 5 Combo Set

Franklin Sports Outdoor Fun 5 Combo Set
GamesVolleyball, badminton, flip toss, horseshoes, flying discNet20 ft wide, 5 ft 1 in highIncludesVolleyball, 2 rackets, 1 birdie, 2 flippers, ball, 2 horseshoes, 2 stakes, glow discAges8 and upUseBeach, park, campgroundOwner ratinga solid owner rating across thousands of owner reviews

The Franklin Outdoor Fun 5 is the box to bring when a dozen people are at the campground and half of them are kids: a 20 foot net with a volleyball, two badminton rackets and a birdie, a flip toss game, horseshoes with ground stakes, and a glow-in-the-dark flying disc for after the fire is lit. It is the only pick here that occupies a whole afternoon. It is also the only pick with a solid rather than excellent rating, and thousands of owner reviews explain why: the net poles and stakes are light, the volleyball is a beach-weight ball, and each game is a budget version of itself. Treat it as five casual games for a weekend rather than equipment that will last years, and it earns its place in the trunk.

Pros
  • Five games in one box for a big group or a family reunion
  • Full-size 20 ft net for volleyball and badminton
  • Glow-in-the-dark disc for after dark
  • Thousands of owner reviews
Cons
  • Lowest rating on the page; owners report flimsy net poles and stakes
  • Each game is a budget version; the volleyball is light
  • Not a two-person set

Food and cooking on a budget

The two things that most improve a cheap camping trip are cold food and hot food. The Titan cooler covers the first for a couple or a day out; a family needs a hard cooler, which is a different price class. For cooking, the GasOne burner runs off the same 20 pound propane tank as a backyard grill, which is far cheaper per meal than the small green canisters, and its cast iron head is what makes it good for big pots and skillets. Pack a lighter, a windscreen and a pot you do not mind blackening. If you backpack, none of this applies and a canister stove from our camping stoves guide is the right call.

Water: straw, pocket pump or full pump

All three filters here use a hollow fiber membrane, and two state a 0.01 micron rating, which handles bacteria and protozoa; none of them is a purifier for viruses, so in parts of the world where that matters you still need treatment tablets. The straw is for one person drinking from the source, the pocket pump fills a bottle or a bladder for one or two hikers, and the Purewell pump fills pots for a camp or a household during an outage. Flow rate is the practical difference: 800 ml a minute through a straw feels slow when you are thirsty; 1,400 ml a minute from a pump fills a liter bottle in under a minute. Replace carbon elements on the maker’s schedule or taste goes first.

Campsite games and the rest of the kit

Ladder toss is the best campground game because it needs no flat court, works for any age and packs into a case; the GoSports version is sturdier and safer around children, the Amazon Basics version is cheaper. The Franklin combo set is for a reunion-sized group where five mediocre games beat one good one. Beyond this list, the things worth budgeting for are a headlamp, a decent sleeping pad and a first aid kit, none of which our catalog carried with enough owner history to rank; and a small battery for phones, which our portable generators guide covers if you want more than a power bank.

What camping gear is worth buying cheap and what is not?

Coolers for short trips, propane burners, water filters and lawn games are all good at budget prices, as this list shows. A tent, a sleeping bag and a sleeping pad are where cheap gear fails on the first cold night, so spend there first.

Is a filter straw enough for a camping trip?

For one person on a day hike or as a backup, yes. For a camp that needs water for cooking and several people, a pump filter like the Purewell is far more practical because it fills pots and bottles. Neither removes viruses; carry tablets where that is a concern.

Can the GasOne burner run on a small propane canister?

It is designed for a standard 20 pound propane tank through the included hose. Adapters for 1 pound canisters exist but reduce output and run time; for canister cooking a small camping stove is the better tool.

How long does the Titan cooler really keep ice?

Titan rates it for up to two days. Owners report that holds in shade with pre-chilled food and block or large ice; in direct sun or opened constantly it is closer to one day. It is sized for about nine cans.

Which ladder toss set is better, GoSports or Amazon Basics?

The GoSports has thicker pre-glued PVC, score trackers and soft rubber bolos, which makes it sturdier and safer for children. The Amazon Basics set is cheaper and plays the same game with harder bolas, so it suits adults and teens.
