Best Compostable Bags in 2026: Certified Kitchen, Countertop and Yard Waste Bags Ranked by Owners

Eight certified compostable bags ranked by size, thickness, certification and owner reviews: UNNI 13 gallon, Forid 1.2 gallon, BioBag 2.6 gallon, 13 gallon drawstring, GreFusion 36 gallon and more.

Our top pickUNNI Compostable Bags, 13 Gallon, 50 Cou…8.8Our score

A compostable bag has one job that a normal trash bag does not: it has to hold wet coffee grounds and melon rind for two or three days, then disappear in a compost pile along with them. The cheap ones fail at the first part, splitting at the seam or weeping through the film, and the dishonest ones fail at the second, marketing “biodegradable” plastic that breaks into fragments rather than compost. We ranked the compostable bags in our beauty and health catalog by the certifications printed on the box (BPI to ASTM D6400 in the US, OK compost HOME or EN 13432 in Europe), film thickness in mils, the bin sizes they actually fit, count per pack, and what thousands of owners report after months of filling them.

We have not composted every bag ourselves; the verdicts rest on the published specs, the certifications and the owner review history, and we score each pick ourselves rather than repeating the figures on the listing. Prices are not printed because they change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page. For the bins these bags line, see our kitchen trash cans guide, and for ordinary plastic liners our trash bags guide. This is the Do Best Deal page for the bags that go to the compost pile instead of the landfill.

How we picked

  • Real certification. Every pick names a standard (ASTM D6400, BPI, OK compost HOME, EN 13432) on its listing; bags described only as “biodegradable” or “eco” were excluded.
  • Thickness stated in mils. Most picks are 0.64 mil or thicker; the 1.28 and 1.57 mil yard bags are the heavy-duty end.
  • A size for every bin. Countertop pails (1.2 to 2.6 gallons), tall kitchen cans (13 gallons) and yard or commercial bins (36 and 55-60 gallons).
  • Owner history. Each pick has a large base of owner reviews and a positive overall sentiment; the one lower-scored pick is included because it is the most-bought small bag and we explain its complaints.
  • Not already covered. None of these bags appears in our trash bag guide.

UNNI Compostable Bags, 13 Gallon, 50 Count, 49.2 Liter, Extra Thick 0.9 Mil
Size13 gallon / 49.2 liter, 23.75 x 31.49 inThickness0.9 milCount50 per rollCertificationsBPI (ASTM D6400), CMA field-tested, OK compost HOME (TUV Austria)MaterialPlant-based resinsOur score8.8/10

UNNI is the 13-gallon compostable bag most people end up with because it does the whole job: it fits a standard tall kitchen can at 23.75 by 31.49 inches, it is thicker than most compostable film at 0.9 mil, and it carries BPI certification to ASTM D6400, CMA field testing in working compost facilities and OK compost HOME from TUV Austria, which means it is accepted by municipal programs and will break down in a backyard pile. Owners widely praise it for holding a week of peelings without tearing, and the brand has been selling the same bag long enough that the review history is deep. There are two things to know. Compostable film ages, so UNNI says to use the roll within nine months and store it cool and dry; buy a roll, not a case. And the most common owner complaints mention a seam leak when a bag has sat for days with very wet scraps, which is true of every bag on this page and is the reason to empty a compost can twice a week. Our score 8.8/10.

Pros
  • Three certifications including home composting, the fullest set on this page
  • Reinforced 0.9 mil film for a bag this size
  • Sized for standard 13 gallon tall kitchen cans
  • The most-bought 13 gallon compostable bag here, widely praised by owners for strength
Cons
  • 50 per roll is a modest count at the price
  • Nine month shelf life once bought; buy only what you will use
  • Most owner complaints mention occasional seam leaks with very wet waste

Best small compostable bag for bathroom and desk bins

Forid Compostable Trash Bags 1.2 Gallon Garbage Bags, Unscented, 150 Count

9.0Our score
Forid Compostable Trash Bags 1.2 Gallon Garbage Bags, Unscented, 150 Count
Size1.2 gallon, 16.9 x 17.7 inFitsRound bins up to 10.7 in diameter, rectangular bins with longest side up to 8 in, height up to 13.7 inCount150 per packCertificationsASTM D6400 and EN 13432StrengthOctagonal heat-sealed bottom, tested to 26 lbOur score9/10

Forid makes the small compostable bag that quietly fixes a problem: the bathroom and bedroom bins that nobody wants to line with a plastic grocery bag. At 1.2 gallons and 16.9 by 17.7 inches, it fits round bins up to 10.7 inches across and rectangular ones with a side up to 8 inches, and the listing is unusually specific about that. The bottom is octagonal and heat-sealed at 230 C, which Forid says survives 26 pounds, and owners widely praise it as the rare small bag that does not leak. It is certified to ASTM D6400 and EN 13432 and the film is a plant starch material that is unscented and translucent green, so you can see when a bin is full. You get 150 per pack, which is more than any other pick here. It is not a kitchen compost bag in the usual sense, because a countertop pail fills a 1.2-gallon liner in a day, and Forid does not state the thickness in mils. For every other small bin in the house it is the pick. Our score 9/10.

Pros
  • 150 bags, the best count per pack on this page
  • Octagonal sealed bottom tested to 26 lb; owners praise it as leak-free
  • Fits the small bins most listings ignore: bathroom, bedroom, desk, nursery
  • Clear green film lets you see what is in the bin
Cons
  • 1.2 gallons is too small for a countertop compost pail that fills daily
  • Thickness is not stated in mils on the listing
  • Plant starch film can feel softer than polyethylene

2.6 Gallon Compostable Food Scrap Bags by BioBag, 100 Count, BPI Certified, Meets ASTM D6400 Standards, Made in USA, Kitchen Counter Bin Liners
Size2.6 gallon, 16 x 17 inThickness0.64 milCount100 per boxCertificationsBPI (ASTM D6400), CMA composter approved; home compostableOriginMade in the USA with resin from ItalyOur score9/10

BioBag has been making compostable bags longer than almost anyone, and its 2.6-gallon food scrap bag is the benchmark countertop liner. It is 16 by 17 inches, fits most kitchen pails, and is made in the USA from a resin imported from Italy that is certified by BPI to ASTM D6400 and approved by the Compost Manufacturing Alliance after testing in real facilities. The bag is also home compostable. Its distinctive feature is that the film breathes: moisture evaporates through it, which is why BioBag recommends a ventilated pail and why owners widely praise it for keeping smells down compared with sealed plastic. The flip side of breathable film is that it is thin at 0.64 mil and will wick a little, so the pail needs a rinse and the bag needs changing every couple of days rather than weekly. It costs more per bag than the generic rolls below. If you compost at home and want a bag that genuinely vanishes in the pile, this is the one. Our score 9/10.

Pros
  • The original brand in this category and the only pick made in the USA
  • Breathable film lets moisture evaporate, which cuts odor in a vented pail
  • Home compostable and CMA approved for municipal programs
  • Frustration-free packaging; 100 per box
Cons
  • 0.64 mil is thin; change it every two or three days
  • Breathable film means a wet bag will dampen the pail
  • Costs more per bag than the generic 2.6 gallon rolls

13 Gallon Drawstring Compost Bags for Kitchen Compost Bin, Compostable
Size13 gallon, 34 x 26 inThickness1.02 mil (26 micron)ClosureDrawstring handlesCertificationsBPI (ASTM D6400, cert 10530194), OK compost HOME and INDUSTRIAL (TUV Austria), PFAS-free (SGS)MaterialPlant-basedOur score8.8/10

Most compostable bags are plain flat-top sacks you tie by the corners, which is fine until a 13-gallon bag of wet scraps has to be lifted out of a can. This bag adds a drawstring, and it also happens to be the thickest 13-gallon compostable film on the page at 1.02 mil, which is why owners widely praise it for carrying heavy, wet loads without tearing. The certifications are thorough: BPI to ASTM D6400 with the certificate number listed, OK compost HOME and INDUSTRIAL from TUV Austria, and an SGS test for PFAS, the forever chemicals that have turned up in some compostable packaging. At 34 by 26 inches it fits tall kitchen cans and most compost carts, and it doubles as a leaf bag. It is a newer brand without the decades of history behind BioBag, and the listing honestly notes that commercial composting is not available everywhere, which is true of every pick here. If you want the strongest 13-gallon bag and a handle to carry it by, this is it. Our score 8.8/10.

Pros
  • The thickest 13 gallon bag here at 1.02 mil
  • Drawstring closure, rare on compostable bags, makes a full bag easy to carry
  • BPI certificate number printed on the listing plus OK compost HOME and PFAS-free testing
  • Widely praised by owners for handling heavy, wet loads
Cons
  • Newer brand with a shorter track record than UNNI or BioBag
  • Commercial composting may not exist in your area, as the listing itself notes
  • Drawstring adds a little bulk at the rim of a small can

GreFusion Compostable 36 gallon Trash Bags, Extra Thick 1.28 Mills, Compost 36 Gal Trash Bags (Kitchen Tall Garbage Bags), Compostable Lawn & Leaf Yard Waste bags,ASTM D6400,Bpi Certified
Size33-36 gallon, 53.1 x 35.4 in (22.6 in diameter)Thickness1.28 milCertificationsBPI (ASTM D6400, EN 13432), OK compost HOMEBottomStar-sealedMaterialCorn starch basedOur score8.8/10

For yard waste, the choice has traditionally been paper leaf bags that go soft in rain or plastic ones that no compost site wants. GreFusion’s 36-gallon bag is the middle path: a corn-starch film 1.28 mil thick with a star-sealed bottom, 53 inches tall and 35 wide, certified by BPI to ASTM D6400 and EN 13432 and OK compost HOME, so it can go into a municipal green cart or a home pile along with the leaves. Owners widely praise it for autumn cleanup and for lining outdoor compost cans, where it stays intact through wet weather better than paper. The listing is candid about compostable film’s weakness: when the bag holds food waste, especially acidic or alkaline waste, dispose of it within three days, because the material is designed to start breaking down. It is also, obviously, too large for a kitchen can. For a garden, a restaurant kitchen or a big outdoor compost bin, it is the pick. Our score 8.8/10.

Pros
  • Big enough for leaf piles, garden waste and outdoor compost cans
  • Extra-thick 1.28 mil film with a star-sealed bottom
  • BPI and OK compost HOME certified, so it can go in a backyard pile
  • Widely praised by owners for yard cleanup where paper bags fail in rain
Cons
  • Dispose within three days when holding food waste, per the listing
  • Count per pack is modest for the size
  • Too big for a kitchen can; buy the 13 gallon bags for indoors

Compost Bags, Compostable Trash Bags 2.6 Gallon Compostable Bags, Small Compost Bags for Countertop bin Extra Thick 0.71 Mil. ASTM D6400 Certified By BPI and TÜV AUSTRIA (2.6 Gallon, 200 Units)
Size2.6 gallonThickness0.71 milCount200 per packCertificationsBPI (ASTM D6400) and TUV Austria for backyard compostingUseCountertop compost pails and small kitchen cansOur score8.8/10

If you change your countertop pail liner every day, which the makers of every bag here quietly recommend, 100 bags last three months and the cost adds up. This 2.6-gallon bag comes 200 to a pack, is 0.71 mil, a little thicker than BioBag, and is certified by BPI to ASTM D6400 and by TUV Austria for backyard composting. Owners praise it as the sensible bulk buy for a household that composts every meal, and for holding up better than the thin bags that come with pails. The constraint is time: the listing asks you to buy only what you can use in ten months and to change the bag every one to two days, because compostable film weakens as it ages and as it sits against wet scraps. Two hundred bags at one a day is just inside that window; at one every three days it is not. Store the pack cool and dry, away from the stove. For a daily composter it is the value pick. Our score 8.8/10.

Pros
  • 200 bags in one pack, the biggest countertop count here
  • Slightly thicker than BioBag at 0.71 mil
  • Certified for both industrial and backyard composting
  • Owners praise it as a reliable bulk buy for a daily-change routine
Cons
  • Ten month use-by window means 200 bags must be used quickly
  • Generic brand with less history than BioBag
  • The listing recommends changing every one to two days

55-60 Gallon Compostable Trash Bags Liners, Heavy Duty Extra Thick 1.57 Mil, 208.2 Liter, 15 Bags, Lawn, Yard, and Restaurant Use, ASTM D6400, US BPI, OK Compost Home Certified
Size55-60 gallon, 42 x 48 inThickness1.57 milCount15 per packCertificationsBPI (ASTM D6400, EN 13432), OK compost HOMEBottomOctagonal, integrally formedOur score8.8/10

This is the compostable liner for a 55-gallon restaurant can, a school cafeteria or a big outdoor compost tumbler. At 42 by 48 inches and 1.57 mil it is the thickest and largest bag we found with full certification: BPI to ASTM D6400 and EN 13432, plus OK compost HOME. The film is multi-layer for tear resistance, the bottom is octagonal and formed in one piece, and the maker claims odor reduction, which owners who use it for food waste broadly confirm. The practical limits are the ones that apply to all compostable film, magnified by size. You get only 15 bags per pack, the maker says to store it cool and dry and use it within a year, and a full 55-gallon bag of wet food waste is heavy, so it needs a can with a sturdy rim. No household needs this, but a small food business trying to meet a composting mandate will find few alternatives at this size with the paperwork to match. Our score 8.8/10.

Pros
  • The thickest bag on this page at 1.57 mil
  • Fits 55 to 60 gallon restaurant and yard cans
  • Multi-layer film for tear resistance and odor control
  • Certified for home and industrial composting
Cons
  • Only 15 bags per pack
  • Use within one year; the listing says buy only ten months of supply
  • Overkill for any household can

1.6 Gallon Compost Bags Small Compostable Trash Bags for Countertop Bin
Size1.6 gallon, 28.3 in rim, 13.8 in longCount150 per pack in a recyclable cartonCertificationsASTM D6400 and EN 13432MaterialCorn starch, vegetable oils and PBATUseSmall countertop pailsOur score7.8/10

We include this 1.6-gallon bag because it is the most-bought small compost bag in our catalog and because its mixed owner sentiment teaches the most important lesson about this category. On paper it is fine: certified to ASTM D6400 and EN 13432, made from corn starch, vegetable oil and PBAT, 150 to a carton with no plastic packaging, and sized for the small pails that come with most countertop caddies. The trouble is that compostable film has a shelf life, and the most common owner complaints mention bags that arrived brittle or split along the seam after a day, which is what aged starch film does. Owners who received a fresh carton are generally happy. If you buy it, buy one carton at a time, check that the first bag stretches rather than crackles, and use it within a few months. If you would rather not gamble, the BioBag or the 200-count 2.6-gallon bag above do the same job with a more consistent history. Our score 7.8/10.

Pros
  • The most-bought small compost bag in the catalog
  • 150 bags per pack in a plastic-free carton
  • Certified to ASTM D6400 and EN 13432
  • Fits the 1 to 1.5 gallon pails sold with most compost caddies
Cons
  • Lowest owner sentiment on this page; most complaints mention bags that have gone brittle or split
  • Thickness is not stated
  • Shelf life is the problem: a stale pack fails

What the certifications mean

“Biodegradable” on its own means nothing enforceable; everything biodegrades eventually. “Compostable” is a tested claim. ASTM D6400 is the US standard: the bag must break down in a commercial composting facility within a set time and leave no toxic residue, and BPI is the body that certifies to it. EN 13432 is the European equivalent. OK compost HOME from TUV Austria is the stricter one, because it requires breakdown at the lower temperatures of a backyard pile rather than a hot industrial windrow. If you compost at home, look for OK compost HOME or an explicit home-compostable claim: the UNNI, BioBag, 13-gallon drawstring, GreFusion and 55-gallon bags here have it. If your scraps go to a municipal green cart, BPI or ASTM D6400 is what the facility wants, and it is worth checking that your city accepts bagged food waste at all, because some want loose scraps only.

Why compostable bags leak, and how to stop it

Every pick on this page has owner complaints about leaking, and the physics is the same for all of them. Compostable film is made from plant starch and compostable polyesters that are designed to be attacked by moisture and microbes; a bag of wet coffee grounds is exactly that attack, started early. The fixes are routine. Empty a countertop pail every two or three days, not weekly. Keep the roll in a cool cupboard, not above the stove, and buy only what you will use in six to nine months, because the makers themselves quote a shelf life. Choose the thicker film if your waste is wet: the 1.02 mil 13-gallon bag and the 1.28 and 1.57 mil yard bags are noticeably tougher than the 0.64 mil BioBag. And line a pail that has a vented lid, which lets moisture out and keeps the film drier. Do none of that and any compostable bag will fail; do all of it and the UNNI or BioBag will last as long as you need.

Which size do you need?

A countertop caddy of a gallon or so takes the 1.6-gallon bag, or the 2.6-gallon BioBag folded over the rim; the 2.6-gallon size fits most pails from 1.5 to 2.5 gallons. Bathroom, bedroom and desk bins take the Forid 1.2 gallon. A tall 13-gallon kitchen can, the size most households use for general trash, takes the UNNI or the drawstring bag, and that is the size to buy if your city lets you put all food waste in the green cart and you want to collect it in the kitchen rather than on the counter. Outdoor compost cans, leaf cleanup and small food businesses move up to the GreFusion 36-gallon or the 55-60 gallon liner. Measure the can’s rim circumference and height, and buy a bag whose width is at least half the circumference with a few inches to spare at the top for folding over.

Can I put compostable bags in my backyard compost pile?

Only bags certified for home composting, such as OK compost HOME from TUV Austria. The UNNI, BioBag, 13 gallon drawstring, GreFusion and 55-60 gallon bags here carry that claim. Industrial-only bags break down too slowly in a cool pile.

Why did my compostable bags go brittle in the box?

Compostable film ages. Makers quote a shelf life of nine to twelve months and say to store rolls cool and dry. Buy one pack at a time and use it within a few months; a bag that crackles instead of stretching is stale.

How often should I change a compostable kitchen bag?

Every one to three days for a countertop pail with wet scraps, which is what the makers themselves recommend. A 13 gallon can of mostly dry waste can go longer. Wet waste left for a week will find the seam of any compostable bag.

Are compostable bags the same as biodegradable bags?

No. Compostable is a tested claim under ASTM D6400, EN 13432 or OK compost standards; biodegradable is not regulated and often describes ordinary plastic with an additive that breaks it into fragments. Every pick here is certified compostable.

Which compostable bag is best for a 13 gallon kitchen can?

The UNNI 13 gallon for its three certifications and long owner history, or the 13 gallon drawstring bag if you want thicker 1.02 mil film and handles to carry it by.
