A refrigerator water filter is not something you choose the way you choose a toaster. The best one is the cartridge your refrigerator was designed around, replaced on schedule. So this guide is organized by fridge brand. If your Frigidaire takes the PureSource 3 cartridge, buy the Frigidaire WF3CB: it is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53, rated for 200 gallons, and has 51,710 owner ratings at 4.7 stars, more than any other filter in our catalog. Samsung, LG, Whirlpool and GE owners each have a genuine cartridge below.
Every filter here is the appliance maker’s own part. We went through the 41 water filters in our appliance catalog and kept one genuine cartridge per brand, choosing only listings whose name, part number, photo and specifications describe the same filter; that rule cost us some heavily reviewed listings that mix several models on one page. We did not test water quality. The certification and contaminant claims are the makers’, as printed in each listing, and the ratings are owner ratings at the time of writing. Prices change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page.
How we picked
- Genuine parts only. All five are sold under the refrigerator brand’s own name and described as genuine or OEM in the listing.
- A certification named in the listing. Each pick cites NSF certification, and four of the five give the standard numbers.
- One clear listing per brand. We passed over listings whose title names one cartridge while the photo or reviews describe another, however many reviews they have.
- Owner ratings of 4.4 stars or higher. Four picks have 650 to 51,000 reviews; the GE pick has 375, which we explain below.
- Single filters, so prices compare directly. Multi-packs exist for three of them and we say where.
The picks
Frigidaire WF3CB Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement, White, 1 Count

WF3CB is the PureSource 3 cartridge, a 9-inch filter that pushes in until it locks. Frigidaire states that it is tested and certified to NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53 and lists chlorine taste and odor, particulates, cysts, lead, mercury, pesticides, BPA, asbestos and pharmaceuticals among the things it reduces, with a rated capacity of 200 gallons. The listing repeats one warning twice: do not mix it up with ULTRAWF, which is longer and fits other models. After a change, hold the Water Filter button for three seconds to reset the light. One owner found a new filter cured a slow dispenser and ice maker trouble after running far past the six-month mark.
- 51,710 owner ratings at 4.7 stars, the most reviewed filter in our catalog
- Certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53; listing also cites WQA
- Listing names lead, mercury, cysts, pesticides and chlorine taste among what it reduces
- Push-to-lock installation
- Easy to confuse with the longer ULTRAWF, which fits different Frigidaire models
- The reminder light has to be reset by hand
- Owners like it but several say it is not cheap

Samsung has used several cartridges over the years, and HAF-QIN is the one for many of its RF-series French door refrigerators. The listing is unusually precise: it says the filter is certified by NSF International to Standard 42 for chlorine taste and odor and Standard 53 for cysts, turbidity, lead, asbestos, benzene, carbofuran, p-dichlorobenzene and mercury, and its specifications add Standard 401. It installs with a quarter turn, is rated for 300 gallons, and the description lists the models it fits, which is the first place to check. Owners rate it 4.7 stars across 3,677 reviews; one changed it without even shutting off the water. Samsung’s genuine three-pack of the same cartridge, rated 4.7 stars by 1,382 owners, is also in our catalog.
- 4.7 stars from 3,677 owners
- Listing names the NSF standards and the substances covered: cysts, lead, asbestos, benzene, mercury and more
- Replaces cartridges DA97-17376B, DA97-08006A-B and DA97-08006A-1
- The listing prints a long list of compatible RF-series model numbers
- Only for the Samsung models it lists; older Samsung fridges use HAF-CU1 or HAF-CIN
- One owner complains about slow shipping from a marketplace seller
- Single filter only on this listing
LG LT500P - 6 Month / 500 Gallon Capacity Replacement Refrigerator Water Filter

The LT500P is the cartridge for the LG refrigerators that take it, and it has the highest owner rating on this page: 4.8 stars from 3,783 reviews. LG’s listing cites NSF Standards 42, 53 and 401, rates the filter for six months or 500 gallons, and gives the genuine part number ADQ75795101. Two owners who had tried aftermarket filters describe going back to the genuine part and getting a flawless fit with no leaks or odd taste; another with hard water says it helps. One useful four-star review notes that the paper insert’s removal instructions were wrong for that owner’s fridge while the label on the filter itself was right. If your LG uses a different cartridge, our catalog also has the LT600P, rated 4.6 stars by 2,413 owners.
- 4.8 stars from 3,783 owners, the highest rating of the five
- Largest rated capacity here at 500 gallons
- Listing says it does not strip beneficial minerals such as fluoride
- Owners who switched back from third-party filters report a proper fit and no leaks
- A 4-star owner says the paper instructions contradict the label on the filter; follow the label
- LG has several cartridges; LT600P and LT800P are different parts
- Listing warns that packaging may vary

Whirlpool labels its cartridges by number, and Filter 2 replaces part P9WB2L. Whirlpool says it is certified to reduce 99% of lead and 28 contaminants in all, including pesticides and pharmaceuticals, over six months or 200 gallons, and the listing’s own advice is to check the number on your previous filter before ordering. One owner with a KitchenAid refrigerator found it the only filter that fit, a reminder that Whirlpool parts cover more than one brand name. Owners rate it 4.7 stars across 654 reviews. Filters 1, 3 and 4 are separate products, so match the number, not the shape.
- 4.7 stars from 654 owners
- Listing states 99% lead reduction and NSF certification for 28 contaminants
- Two-pack option on the same listing
- An owner says it is the same product as the big-box store for less
- Fewer reviews than the Frigidaire, Samsung and LG picks
- Whirlpool numbers its filters 1 to 4, and they are not interchangeable
- An owner calls it expensive, though the only filter that fit
GE MSWF Refrigerator Water Filter | Certified to Reduce Lead, Sulfer, and 50+ Other Impurities| Pack of 1

GE’s MSWF is the slim twist-in cartridge for GE and GE Profile side-by-side refrigerators from the 2007 model year onward. The listing says it meets NSF and ANSI standards and reduces lead, mercury, benzene, toxaphene, carbofuran, alachlor, cryptosporidium and giardia, and it notes that loose carbon dust at the tip is normal and is why a new filter must be purged. Owners rate it 4.4 stars across 375 reviews, less evidence than the other picks. Of the two 1-star reviews, one is a defective filter from a marketplace seller and one would not stay running; a five-star reviewer had no water at first simply because the filter was not twisted fully into the locked position, which takes more force than expected. A newer GE French-door model almost certainly takes the XWFE or RPWFE cartridge instead; check the manual.
- Genuine GE factory filter, per the listing
- Listing names lead, mercury, benzene, cryptosporidium and giardia among what it reduces
- Slim design, no tools to change
- Lowest single-filter price of the five when we checked
- Only 375 reviews at 4.4 stars, the thinnest data here
- For older side-by-side models only; newer GE fridges use different cartridges
- Two 1-star reviews: one defective filter from a third-party seller, one that would not stay running

Find your filter number first
A brand name is not enough. Samsung, LG, GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool each sell several cartridges that differ in length, connector and electronics. Three places give you the right number:
- The old filter. The model is printed on its label.
- The owner’s manual, in the section on the water filter.
- The refrigerator’s model plate, usually inside the fresh-food compartment. Search that model number on the maker’s parts site.
Match the number exactly. WF3CB and ULTRAWF are both Frigidaire filters that do not fit the same refrigerators; Samsung’s HAF-QIN, HAF-CU1 and HAF-CIN are three different cartridges, as are LG’s LT500P, LT600P and LT800P, Whirlpool’s Filters 1 through 4 and GE’s MSWF, XWFE and RPWFE. Our catalog carries several of these, including the LG LT600P and Whirlpool Filters 3 and 4; if the pick above is not your number, search for the one that is. Bosch owners have a genuine option too: the UltraClarity Pro cartridge (11032531, also sold as BORPLFTR55) is rated 4.6 stars by 1,454 owners, certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 and rated for 250 gallons, per its listing.
What NSF 42, 53 and 401 mean
These are NSF/ANSI standards for drinking water filters. Standard 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor. Standard 53 covers contaminants with health effects, such as lead and cysts. Standard 401 covers certain emerging compounds, including some pharmaceuticals.
Certification is always for named substances at stated levels, so a “99%” figure in a listing applies to the substances tested, not to everything in your water; if a particular contaminant matters to you, read the performance data sheet on the maker’s site. Two limits apply to every carbon filter here: it does not remove dissolved minerals, so it will not fix hard-water scale, and it is not meant for water that is microbiologically unsafe. If your supply is a private well or under a boil notice, a fridge filter is not the fix.
Genuine or compatible?
Third-party filters cost much less, and owners mention that in nearly every listing. We kept to genuine parts because the data supports it: LG owners describe leaks and odd tastes from aftermarket filters that stopped when they went back to the genuine part, a GE owner warns that the cheaper look-alikes are poorly made, and a certification claim is only worth something if you can look it up. If you do buy a compatible filter, check the exact model in the certifier’s public listings first, and watch the housing for leaks for a day after installing it.
Replacing it
LG, Whirlpool and GE state a six-month interval; the Frigidaire is rated by capacity at 200 gallons and the Samsung at 300. Change sooner if the flow slows. Follow the instructions in the box, and where the paper and the filter label disagree, as one LG owner found, the label on the filter wins. Run water through a new filter to clear air and loose carbon; a Frigidaire owner suggests a gallon or two, and the GE listing explains that the dust at the tip is why. Then reset the indicator as your manual describes. Kitchen due for more than a filter? See our guides to microwaves and air fryers.
Which water filter does my refrigerator take?
Read the model number on the filter currently installed, or look it up in the owner manual. Buy that exact number. Filters from the same brand, such as Frigidaire WF3CB and ULTRAWF, or Samsung HAF-QIN and HAF-CU1, are different parts and do not swap.
How often should a fridge water filter be replaced?
Every six months is the interval LG, Whirlpool and GE give. By capacity, the Frigidaire WF3CB and Whirlpool Filter 2 are rated for 200 gallons, the Samsung HAF-QIN for 300 and the LG LT500P for 500, so a large household may need to change sooner than six months. A slowing dispenser is another sign.
Do refrigerator filters remove lead and PFAS?
Lead is named in the Frigidaire, Samsung, Whirlpool and GE listings; the LG LT500P listing cites NSF 53 but does not name lead in the data we hold. None of the five listings claims PFAS or PFOA/PFOS reduction, so check the performance data sheet for your cartridge if that matters to you. Certification applies only to the substances named.
How do I reset the filter light?
On Frigidaire models that use the WF3CB, the listing says to press and hold the Water Filter button for three seconds until the display turns from red to green. Other brands use different buttons, so follow the manual.
Bottom line
Match the part number and buy the genuine cartridge: WF3CB for Frigidaire, HAF-QIN for the Samsung models it lists, LT500P for LG, Filter 2 for Whirlpool and MSWF for older GE side-by-sides. Whichever you buy, put the next replacement date on the calendar.
