Makita RP2301FC 3-1/4 HP* Plunge Router, with Variable Speed

I first tried this router in a woodworking class. In the building of our project there were several slots to be routed. One bench had this router and another had the Festool, which I thought I wanted. What I found with the Makita is that it has an ultra smooth plunge. It does not bind at all. The hand grips are secure and comfortable with the trigger in just the right place. An added bonus is the mechanism for adding a collet, which is simple and very fast. So glad I got to try it first. Very powerful, and accurate depth setting

Finally got a chance to use it today in the most undesirable way imaginable, cutting in mortise and tenon joints over my head on some timber framing. Wood chips raining all over me, a little heavy for using overhead but that heft adds to the stability and control, under normal circumstances this is a big advantage. I bought this router strictly to plane slabs and tabletops and I must say it is a beast. I made one pass over a 8' Pecan and epoxy tabletop and it never bogged down or lost power. Its heavy enough to sit firmly on my router sled which is good. Its easy to control for the size and power. I am happy with this router. It would be nice if it came with a case or even a bag to store it in. I know you can buy the crates from Makita but then you gotta buy the foam inserts. I bought this because I didnt want to spend the $1000+ on a festool. Maybe Im just spoiled on my Festools products. But all in all

Arrived today. It is beautifully designed, with nice features, fit and finish. Came with only a quarter inch collet, disappointing because the product description mentioned support for half inch bits. Go figure, my old smaller cheaper Hitachi came standard with both. Despite it looking like a top level router, I am also surprised that it still uses mechanical carbon brushes. The acceleration and braking are a bit slower than I expected. The power, heft and cutting seem great with the first few cuts. The action and plunging and smooth control are nice, as expected. The manual is poor. It doesn'

This router is the best one I’ve ever used. There’s more Makita tools that I like but I’m not stuck on ‘em. My little workshop is equipped like most everyone else’s…with a horde of tools from different makers. I try to give honest reviews and I like this router.
