I'm the family cook, and admittedly a bit of a gadget freak. However, if I was transported to a desert island and could only bring a few items, one would be a chef's knife. It is in the top 5 most essential cooking tools. Knives come in all levels of quality and expense. A common piece of advice is to buy good (ie expensive) knives. This is neither necessary nor a good idea.If you were a professional chef who was using a knife hundreds of times a day, you would want a knife that would hold its edge. Those knives use exotic metals and take skill to sharpen. I'm guessing that most chefs sharpen

The fit and finish on these is comparable to knives costing much more. They were plenty sharp upon first use. I haven't had them long enough to determine how long they hold their edge.I wish the handles were a little heavier to make them a bit better balanced - but that is really nitpicking. After using them for a few days in a row, I just got used to their weight.The only 'con' and this is so small that it doesn't warrant taking a star of
