Brother SM1400 14-Stitch Sewing Machine

It is sooooo crazy how long I kept this machine in the box. Intimidated by it! A year later I finally unboxed it and have been gradually getting acquainted with it. It could have come with an easier to understand manual, but I watched a video on YouTube to thread the machine and used pre-filled bobbins. I managed to jam it within the first 30 mins by trying different settings but go it unjammed! I AM VICTORIOUS!!! I would not let it defeat me!!!! Overall, I think it's a good machine. And according to my amateur review it's a good buy for a beginner

I wanted a simple machine for small projects and this is perfect. It has a variety of stitches, easy to thread, and I’ve had no issues with it. Lightweight, and easy to move. I keep it under a cover until needed.

I didn’t expect much for $99. I never owned a sewing machine before and did not know how to use one, so since I hate sewing by hand and I was determined to make my own cushion covers I decided on this sewing machine - not expecting to use it much for anything else. It is super easy - with the help of YouTube videos since I have no patience for manuals, I learn how to thread, fill a bobbin (never heard of a bobbin before), change sewing feet, see a zipper, etc….. I was so surprised of all the different stitches and how professional the final result looked. My cushion covers came out perfect and

I just needed something to do hemming and minor alterations and repairs. I can no longer lift my old machine. This is perfect! Lightweight to lift but heavy enough to stay in place when using. And many stitch selections at your fingertips.

I love this machine! It’s lightweight, runs quiet, is easy to thread, it’s perfect for the projects I sew. I’m used to lifting the foot from behind the foot so it’s a challenge for me to get used to it being on the right side plus the place the thread goes through before you thread the needle is hard to get the thread through, but other than that I’ve had no problems.

We purchased this for our 10 year old granddaughter for her birthday. She loves it and has made many items! She says it was easy to learn to use and the instruction manual was very helpful.

At 85+ y/o, I am so pleased with this 12#, very efficient portable sewing machine. It most definitely meets my needs and expectations to sew again without having to drag out my previous portable which was effective but so very, very heavy that I had quit sewing.. This machine has fullfilled my wants, but I must caution buyers to have patience in closely following the provided directions in getting started. To me, the threading of the machine, both upper and lower threading, was very unique. Get that part right and you will be very pleased with this choice.

I decided I wanted to start making my own clothes and so far so good! Easy to use.
