I made my first batch using the enclosed cup and the amount of water directed. I made the full amount: 3 of the cupfuls, and look at the picture -- the rice was up to the top. EDIT: Another review on here mentioned to use an upside-down spoon over the hole in the lid to stop the splatter and I will say it works like a charm!
