Grinding wheels come in two families that share a name and nothing else. Depressed-centre Type 27 discs spin on a 4-1/2 inch angle grinder at 13,000 rpm to knock down welds, mill scale and rust; bench grinder wheels are thick vitrified stones that turn at 3,600 rpm to sharpen chisels, drill bits and mower blades. A third kind, the diamond cup, grinds concrete and stone. We ranked the grinding wheels in our abrasive and finishing products catalog by abrasive (aluminium oxide, white aluminium oxide or brazed diamond), size and arbor, grit and what it suits, maximum rpm and reinforcement, pack size, and what thousands of welders, fabricators and sharpeners report after wearing them down.
We have not ground a test weld with every wheel ourselves; the verdicts rest on the spec sheets and on the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page. For the thin discs that cut rather than grind, see our cut-off wheels for angle grinders guide, and if the bench grinder is mostly for the kitchen, our knife sets guide covers the blades. Do Best Deal ranks on owner history and spec sheets, not samples.
How we picked
- Grinding, not cutting. Every pick is a 1/4 inch Type 27 disc, a cup wheel or a bench stone; thin cut-off wheels and flap discs live in other guides.
- Specs stated. Abrasive, grit, diameter, thickness, arbor and maximum rpm must be on the listing, because an unmarked wheel on a grinder is a hazard.
- Reinforcement. Angle grinder discs must be fiberglass reinforced; bench wheels must be vitrified bond with a stated rpm ceiling.
- Pack size that matches use. Five-packs for a home shop, 10 and 25 for fabrication, singles for bench wheels that last years.
- Owner history. Every pick holds a strong or excellent owner rating across hundreds to thousands of owner reviews; the ranking weighs volume, rating and fit.
The picks
BHA 4-1/2 x 1/4 x 7/8 Metal Grinding Disc, Angle Grinder Wheel - 5 Pack

BHA, formerly Black Hawk Abrasives, makes these on Long Island and they are the angle grinder disc owners rate highest here. Each is a Type 27 depressed-centre wheel, 4-1/2 inches across and a full quarter inch thick, in A24 extra-coarse aluminium oxide held in a hard resinoid bond with fiberglass running through the body, rated to 13,300 rpm. The quarter inch carries heavy stock removal on weld cleanup, edge prep and rust, and the disc is balanced so it does not chatter. Owners widely praise how flat and true they run compared with import discs and how long each one lasts on stainless; most owner complaints mention the price per disc and the five-pack running out. For a home welder or a small shop it is the disc to standardise on.
- Excellent owner rating, the best of the angle grinder discs here
- A24 grit pulls stock fast and keeps a usable edge as it wears
- Precision balanced so it runs with little vibration
- Made by a Long Island abrasives company since 2015, with real support
- Five discs go quickly in a fabrication shop
- Priced above the bulk KSEIBI and HOMO FABER per disc
- Too coarse for finish blending; follow with a flap disc
KSEIBI 651006 Aluminum Oxide Grinding Wheels, 10-Pack, 4-1/2 x 1/4 Inch

The KSEIBI 10-pack is the fabrication-shop answer: the same 4-1/2 by 1/4 inch Type 27 format as the BHA, in premium aluminium oxide rated to 13,300 rpm, at a price per disc that makes burning through one on a rusty trailer frame less painful. KSEIBI rates it for solid steel, tool steel, high-speed steel and stainless, and for grinding, deburring and rust removal on both edges and faces. Owners widely praise the consistency across the pack and the value; most owner complaints mention a slightly faster wear rate than the BHA or Bosch discs and the listing not stating a grit number. If the grinder runs most days, buy this and keep the BHA for the jobs where finish matters.
- Ten discs at a lower price per disc than the BHA
- Depressed centre for aggressive edge and surface grinding
- Strong owner rating from a large review base
- Rated for stainless and tool steel, not just mild steel
- Grit number not stated on the listing
- Owners report slightly faster wear than premium discs
- No individual wrapping
HOMO FABER 25 Pack Grinding Wheels 4 1/2 Inch, Angle Grinder Disc

The HOMO FABER 25-pack is the bulk buy with a quality story: 46-grit aluminium oxide in fiberglass-reinforced layers, MPA certified, precision balanced to 13,300 rpm, and each disc individually wrapped so none arrive chipped or warped. The 46 grit is slightly finer than the BHA A24, which means a hair slower on heavy stock and a smoother surface after, a trade many fabricators prefer. It carries an excellent owner rating, though from a smaller base than the veterans here. Owners widely praise the wrapping, the lack of wobble and the price per disc; most owner complaints are simply that 25 is more than a hobbyist will use before they are no longer fresh. For a shop with a grinder that runs all week it is the economical choice.
- Twenty-five discs, each wrapped so they arrive flat
- Forty-six grit is a touch finer than A24, so it blends as well as removes
- MPA certified and precision balanced; excellent owner rating
- Lowest cost per disc on the page
- Newest product here with the fewest reviews
- Forty-six grit removes stock a little slower than the BHA A24
- Twenty-five is overkill for an occasional user
KSEIBI 644030 Diamond Concrete Grinding Wheel 4 1/2 inch for Polishing and Cleaning Stone Concrete Surface, Cement, Marble, Rock, Granite, and Thinset Removing, Angle Grinder Wheels Cup

The KSEIBI diamond cup is the wheel for the job an aluminium oxide disc cannot do: taking thinset off a slab, knocking down a high spot in concrete, levelling a stone step or scraping epoxy and glue off a floor. Two rows of brazed diamond segments five millimetres tall remove material fast, wet or dry, on a standard 4-1/2 inch angle grinder. Owners widely praise it for tile removal prep and for how much faster it is than renting a floor grinder for a small area; most owner complaints are about dust, which is fierce when dry and demands a grinder shroud and a vacuum, and about the coarse finish, which is the point of a cup wheel. For masonry and flooring work it is the first wheel to buy.
- Removes thinset and levels concrete far faster than an abrasive disc
- Double row of brazed segments for fast removal
- Strong owner rating from a large review base
- Works wet or dry
- Makes enormous dust dry; use a shroud and a vacuum
- Not for metal
- Leaves a coarse finish that needs a polishing pad to refine
POWERTEC Bench Grinder Wheel, 8 Inch Grinding Wheel 100 Grit, Aluminum Oxide, 8 Bench Grinder Wheels for Pedestal and Benches, 1 Inch Thick 5/8 Inch Arbor, Sharpening Shaping Drill Bits, Knife, Stone - 15522V

The POWERTEC 8-inch 100 grit is the wheel most bench grinders should have on one side: fine enough to put an edge on a chisel, plane iron or drill bit without burning it, coarse enough to reshape a screwdriver tip or clean rust off a hinge. It is aluminium oxide, 8 inches by 1 inch on a 5/8 inch arbor, rated to 3,600 rpm, and POWERTEC says plainly it is for carbon and tool steel, not carbide. Owners widely praise it as a cheap, true-running replacement for the coarse grey wheels grinders ship with; most owner complaints mention needing to dress it on arrival and that it heats a thin blade if you lean on it, which is true of all grey aluminium oxide. Pair it with the 36 grit below for a coarse-and-fine setup.
- Hundred grit balances removal and finish for everyday sharpening
- Strong owner rating, the most-reviewed bench wheel here
- Resists water, oil and acid
- Fits most standard 8-inch bench grinders
- Not for tungsten carbide or ceramic tools
- Check the arbor; 5/8 inch only, no bushings mentioned
- Grey aluminium oxide runs hotter than white
POWERTEC Bench Grinder Wheel 8 Inch 36 Grit, Aluminum Oxide Grinding Wheel for Bench Pedestal Grinder, 1 Inch Thick 5/8 Inch Arbor, Sharpening and Shaping Drill Bits, Blade, and Chisel 1PK (15516)

The 36 grit is the other half of the pair: the coarse wheel that takes a nicked mower blade, a chipped axe or a mushroomed chisel back to shape before the 100 grit refines it. It is the same 8 by 1 inch, 5/8 inch arbor, 3,600 rpm aluminium oxide format as the 15522V so the two balance on one grinder. Owners widely praise the fast stock removal and the price; most owner complaints mention the listing claiming non-ferrous suitability when aluminium loads any aluminium oxide wheel, and the obvious fact that a 36 grit edge is not a finished edge. For garden tools, cold chisels and rough shaping it is the wheel that saves the fine one from abuse.
- Thirty-six grit reshapes a mower blade or axe fast
- Same size and arbor as the 100 grit so the pair matches
- Strong owner rating
- Chemical resistant vitrified wheel
- Far too coarse for finishing an edge
- Listing is inconsistent about which metals it suits
- Loads up on aluminium despite the listing
POWERTEC Bench Grinder Wheel 6 Inch 150 Grit, Aluminum Oxide Grinding Wheel for Bench Pedestal Grinder, 3/4 Inch Thick 1/2 Inch Arbor, Sharpening and Shaping Drill Bits, Blade, and Chisel 1PK (15520)

For the 6-inch grinder in most home shops, the POWERTEC 150 grit is the fine wheel that gets chisels, plane irons and drill bits close enough to finished that a few strokes on a stone complete the edge. It is 6 by 3/4 inch on a 1/2 inch arbor, aluminium oxide, rated to 4,140 rpm, and again it is for carbon and tool steel rather than carbide. Owners widely praise the edge it leaves and the gentle cut that is harder to burn a blade on; most owner complaints mention the wheel glazing over if it is not dressed and the slow pace on anything that needs reshaping. Put a coarse wheel on the other side and it is a complete sharpening station.
- One-fifty grit leaves a near-finished edge on chisels and bits
- Fits the common 6-inch home-shop grinder
- Strong owner rating
- Resists water, oil and acid
- Slow for reshaping; needs a coarse partner
- Half-inch arbor only
- Fine grit glazes if you do not dress it

Angle grinder discs: thickness, grit and the Type 27 shape
A grinding disc is a quarter inch thick and has a depressed centre so the nut sits below the face and the disc can be worked at a 15 to 30 degree angle; that shape is Type 27, and every angle grinder disc here is one. Thickness is what separates it from a cut-off wheel, which is a tenth of the thickness and must never be used on its side. Grit is coarse by design: A24 on the BHA removes metal fastest, 46 on the HOMO FABER removes a little slower and leaves a smoother face. For weld cleanup and edge prep the coarse disc wins; for blending a repair you follow it with a flap disc. Match the 7/8 inch arbor and the 13,300 rpm rating to your grinder, and replace any disc that is chipped on the edge.
Bench wheels: grit pairs, grey versus white
A bench grinder has two wheels, and the sensible setup is coarse on one side and fine on the other: 36 grit to reshape, 100 or 150 to sharpen. Grey aluminium oxide (the POWERTEC wheels) is tough, cheap and runs hot, so you dip the tool in water every few seconds. White aluminium oxide (the Norton) is friable, cuts cooler and leaves a finer edge on hardened steel, at a higher price. Check three things before buying: wheel diameter matches the grinder (6 or 8 inch), the arbor hole matches the shaft or the wheel includes bushings, and the wheel’s rated rpm is above the grinder’s speed. Dress a new wheel flat before first use, and ring-test it by tapping with a screwdriver handle; a dull thud means a crack.
When you need diamond instead
Aluminium oxide grinds metal and does nothing useful on concrete, stone or tile. For those you need diamond segments brazed to a steel cup, like the KSEIBI, which grinds through thinset, levels slab high spots and scrapes glue and epoxy in minutes. Use a dust shroud and a vacuum, or wet the surface, because silica dust from dry concrete grinding is a serious lung hazard. The cup leaves a coarse finish; if the slab will be exposed, follow with polishing pads. Diamond cups are not for metal, and a metal grinding disc is not for stone; keep both in the drawer and the right one on the grinder.
What is the difference between a grinding wheel and a cut-off wheel?
A grinding wheel is about 1/4 inch thick with a depressed centre, used at an angle on its face to remove metal. A cut-off wheel is about 1/16 inch thick and used only on its edge to cut. Never grind on the side of a cut-off wheel.
Which grinding wheel is best for an angle grinder?
The BHA 4-1/2 x 1/4 inch five-pack has the best owner rating for metal; the KSEIBI 10-pack and HOMO FABER 25-pack are the bulk buys. For concrete and stone, use the KSEIBI diamond cup wheel instead.
What grit should a bench grinder wheel be?
Run a coarse 36 grit wheel for reshaping and a 100 or 150 grit wheel for sharpening. The POWERTEC 8-inch 36 and 100 grit wheels pair on one grinder; on a 6-inch grinder the POWERTEC 150 or the Norton white wheel is the fine side.
Can I sharpen carbide tools on these wheels?
No. Aluminium oxide, grey or white, will not cut tungsten carbide; POWERTEC says so on the listing. Carbide needs a green silicon carbide or diamond wheel.
How do I know a bench wheel is safe to mount?
Check the rated rpm is above your grinder speed, the arbor fits without forcing, and ring-test it: hang the wheel on a finger and tap it with a screwdriver handle. A clear ring is good; a dull thud means a crack, and the wheel goes in the bin.
