Sandpaper is the cheapest part of any finishing job and the one people run out of halfway through. The good news is that the sheets which fit the three most common home sanders, the quarter-sheet palm sander, the mouse-shaped detail sander and the triangular oscillating multi-tool, have all settled into standard sizes, so the question is mostly which assortment gives you the right grits, a backing that stays put, and enough sheets to finish the dresser. We ranked the sandpaper sheets and assortments in our abrasive and finishing products catalog by the sander they fit, grit range and how the pack is split, abrasive type, backing and dust-hole pattern, sheet count, and what owners report after a few projects.
We have not sanded a test board with every pack; the verdicts rest on the published specs and on the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page. Round discs for random orbital sanders are a different product, covered in our sanding discs for orbital sanders and 5-inch hook and loop sanding discs guides.
How we picked
- A sander named. Every pick states which sander or pad it fits: quarter-sheet palm sanders, mouse and detail sanders, or triangular multi-tool pads.
- A real grit spread. From coarse 40 and 60 for stripping to 220 and finer for finishing, with the count per grit stated.
- Backing that holds. Hook-and-loop on the detail and triangle sheets; plain paper for the clamp-style palm sander and hand use.
- Aluminum oxide or silicon carbide. We note which, since silicon carbide is the choice for wet sanding and aluminum oxide for wood.
- Owner feedback that is consistently positive, and most picks are well-reviewed across many owners.

Coceca Mouse Detail Sander Sandpaper Sanding Paper Assorted Sanding Pads 40 80 120 180 240 Grits (50pcs Mouse Sandpaper)

The Coceca 50-piece assortment is the mouse-sander sandpaper most people buy, and the owner rating is excellent. It is cut for 140mm detail sanders, the size used by most Black and Decker, Ryobi, Skil and similar mouse-shaped tools, and it comes as ten sheets each of 40, 80, 120, 180 and 240 grit, which takes a painted chair from stripped to ready-for-stain in one box. The abrasive is aluminum oxide, which stays sharp on wood and does not load as quickly as cheaper grit, and the hook-and-loop backing sticks firmly to the pad and peels off cleanly. The sheets have no dust-extraction holes, which does not matter on sanders without a bag but means a little more clogging on those with one; the LotFancy below is the answer if your sander has the 12-hole pad. Measure your pad once to confirm the 140mm fit, then buy two boxes.
- The most-reviewed pack on this page, with an excellent owner rating
- Five grits from stripping-coarse 40 to finishing 240
- Hook-and-loop backing swaps in seconds
- Works on wood, metal, plastic, leather and stone
- No dust holes, so pads without extraction clog faster
- Check the 140mm size against your sander pad
- 40 grit is aggressive for most furniture
LotFancy Sanding Pads for Black and Decker Mouse Sanders, 50PCS 60 80 120 150 220 Grit Sandpaper Assortment - 12 Hole Hook and Loop Palm Detail Sander Sanding Sheets Sand Paper

If your detail sander is a Black and Decker Mouse, this is the pack to buy, and owners give it the best rating of anything here. The sheets are cut to 5-1/4 by 3-3/4 inches with the 12-hole pattern that matches the Mouse pad, so the dust extraction actually works and the paper stays cooler and clears better than a solid sheet. The assortment runs 60, 80, 120, 150 and 220 with ten of each, which skips the aggressive 40 grit of the Coceca and adds the 150 and 220 steps that make the difference between a good finish and a great one on furniture. The abrasive is resin-bonded aluminum oxide, which LotFancy describes as anti-static and anti-clogging, and the hook-and-loop backing holds on the pad. The hole pattern is the one caveat: on a sander with a different layout the holes do nothing, and the Coceca is the more universal choice.
- Best owner rating on this page
- 12-hole pattern lines up with the Mouse dust extraction
- Resin-bonded aluminum oxide resists clogging
- Grit spread from 60 to 220 suits furniture work
- Hole pattern is specific to Mouse-style pads
- No 40 grit for heavy stripping
- 50 sheets go quickly on a big job
S SATC Mouse Detail Sander Sandpaper 50 PCS Mouse Sanding Pads 12 Hole Mouse Sandpaper Assorted 60/80/120/150/220 Grits

S SATC is best known for its orbital sanding discs, and its mouse sheets carry the same reputation: an excellent owner rating from a large base. The pack is 50 sheets at 135mm with a 12-hole dust pattern, ten each of 60, 80, 120, 150 and 220 grit, on an open-coat aluminum oxide that is spaced to shed dust rather than clog, which is what you want on old paint and resinous softwood. The backing is hook and loop. It sits between the Coceca and LotFancy in practice: it has the dust holes the Coceca lacks and fits a slightly different pad size than either, so the one job before ordering is to measure your sander pad; 135mm and 140mm pads are both common and the wrong size either overhangs or leaves a bare edge. If yours is 135mm with holes, this is the right box.
- Excellent owner rating and a large review base
- 12-hole pattern for dust extraction
- Open-coat abrasive clogs less on paint and softwood
- Same practical 60 to 220 grit spread as the LotFancy
- 135mm size; measure against the Coceca 140mm before buying
- No 40 grit
- Brand is better known for discs than sheets
1/4 Sandpaper Sheet, Assorted 60-80-120-180-240, 50 Pack

The quarter-sheet palm sander is the workhorse in most garages, and this 50-pack of 4-1/2 by 5-1/2 inch sheets is the paper to feed it. The sheets are aluminum oxide on a strong paper backing, cut to fit the clamp-style sanders from Ryobi, DeWalt, Skil and Black and Decker, and they work just as well wrapped around a cork block for hand sanding a door edge. The assortment covers 60, 80, 120, 180 and 240 grit, which takes a tabletop from rough-sawn to smooth, and the maker sells single-grit packs for when you find you use 120 twice as fast as the rest. Owners give it an excellent rating. It is for dry sanding only, there are no pre-punched dust holes, so punch them with your sander’s template if it has a bag, and because the backing is plain paper it will not stick to a hook-and-loop pad. For the clamp sander in the drawer, this is the box.
- Fits the standard quarter-sheet clamp palm sander
- Excellent owner rating
- Five grits from 60 to 240 in one box
- Also sold in single grits if you need more of one
- Dry sanding only
- Plain paper backing, so it needs a clamp sander or a sanding block
- No pre-punched dust holes
DEWALT Sandpaper Assortment, Hook and Loop Triangle, 12-Pack (DWASPTRI)

When the job is the inside corner of a window frame, the end of a stair tread or the bit the palm sander cannot reach, the triangular pad on an oscillating multi-tool is the tool, and DEWALT’s 12-pack is the paper most owners trust on it. The triangles are hook and loop with a universal fit that DEWALT says works on all major multi-tool brands with no adapter, and the abrasive is crafted for long life and fast removal, which matters because a multi-tool sands a small area with a lot of friction. Owners give it an excellent rating. The limits are the count, twelve sheets for a small job, and a listing that does not spell out the grit split beyond assorted. For a weekend of trim work it is enough; for a whole staircase, buy the AUSTOR box below and keep the DEWALT pack for the fine finishing passes.
- Excellent owner rating and a trusted brand
- Universal fit for every major oscillating tool pad
- Designed for long life and fast material removal
- Right size for corners, window frames and stair treads
- Only 12 sheets
- Grit breakdown is not itemized in the listing
- Pricier per sheet than the AUSTOR box
AUSTOR 120 Pieces Triangular Sandpaper, Triangle Sanding Sheets

The AUSTOR box is the triangle sandpaper for people who use the multi-tool a lot. It holds 120 sheets cut for the standard 3-1/8 inch, 80mm pad, in nine grits: ten each of 40, 60 and 80 for stripping paint and rust, and fifteen each of 120, 150, 180, 240, 320 and 400 for everything from general wood sanding to a final pass before oil. The abrasive is aluminum oxide and the backing is hook and loop. Owners rate it strongly, below the DEWALT, with the usual complaint being that the coarse grits wear faster than premium paper, which is fair at this price per sheet. There are no dust holes, so keep a vacuum nearby on a pad with extraction. AUSTOR’s own grit guide on the listing, coarse for rough wood, 120 to 180 for general work, 240 and up for finishing, is good advice for beginners.
- 120 sheets across nine grits, the widest range on this page
- Runs from 40 grit stripping to 400 grit finishing
- Strong owner rating
- Fits the standard 80mm multi-tool pad
- No dust holes
- Lower owner rating than the DEWALT, with some reports of grit wearing fast
- Thin sheets need a light touch at the tip
S&F STEAD & FAST Mouse Sander Sandpaper Assortment 70pcs

The S&F STEAD & FAST 70-piece box is the mouse sandpaper to buy when a project runs from stripping to finishing: ten sheets each of 40, 60, 80, 120, 150, 220 and 320 grit, which is the widest range of any detail-sander pack on this page, cut for 140mm pads with a six-hole dust pattern that matches Ryobi and similar corner sanders. The abrasive is a red-brown aluminum oxide on heavy D-weight paper, which resists tearing at the pointed tip where mouse sheets usually give up first, and the box includes a tack cloth for wiping dust before the finish goes on. Owners give it an excellent rating. The six-hole layout is the thing to check: on a 12-hole Black and Decker pad the holes will not line up, and the LotFancy is the match there. For a Ryobi corner cat or a similar tool, this is the premium box.
- Seven grits from 40 to 320, the widest mouse range here
- Heavy D-weight paper backing lasts longer on edges
- Six-hole dust pattern and a free tack cloth
- Excellent owner rating
- Six-hole pattern suits Ryobi-style pads, not the 12-hole Mouse
- Fewer reviews than the Coceca and LotFancy
- Pricier per box
Sandpaper Assortment, Wet Dry Sand Paper 9 x 3.6 Inch

Every other pack here is aluminum oxide for wood; the Shineboc assortment is silicon carbide for the finishing jobs that come after. Twenty-one sheets at 9 by 3.6 inches, three each of 120, 220, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 2000 grit, electrostatically coated so the grit lies evenly and does not clog, on a reinforced backing that survives wet sanding without tearing. Used wet, it levels a varnish or lacquer coat between applications, rubs out a clear coat, polishes a scratched headlight or plastic, and smooths metal before paint, with the water keeping dust down and the paper cutting cleanly. Owners give it an excellent rating. It is not for stripping, three sheets per grit will not last a big project, and it has no backing for a power sander, so it lives wrapped around a rubber block. Keep a pack in the finishing drawer; it is the step most people skip.
- Silicon carbide for wet sanding finishes, metal and plastic
- Grits to 2000 for polishing clear coats and headlights
- Excellent owner rating
- Sheets cut to any size for a block or by hand
- Only three sheets per grit
- Too fine for stripping wood
- Hand or block use; no sander backing

Match the sheet to the sander
Three shapes cover almost every home sander. Quarter-sheet palm sanders clamp a plain 4-1/2 by 5-1/2 inch sheet at each end; the 50-pack above fits them, and the same sheets wrap a block for hand work. Mouse and detail sanders use a teardrop hook-and-loop sheet in one of two common sizes, 135mm or 140mm, with or without dust holes in a 6- or 12-hole pattern; the Coceca, LotFancy, S SATC and S&F packs cover the combinations, and the only homework is to measure your pad and count its holes. Oscillating multi-tools take an 80mm hook-and-loop triangle, which the DEWALT and AUSTOR packs supply. If a sheet overhangs the pad it tears; if it is small it leaves a bare edge that scratches, so a minute with a ruler saves a box of paper.
Grit: how far to go
Sanding is a sequence, and skipping steps shows under the finish. For stripping paint or levelling rough wood start at 40 or 60; for a surface that is already flat, start at 80 or 120. Move up one or two steps at a time, 80 to 120 to 180, removing the scratches of the previous grit each time, and stop at 180 or 220 for paint or film finishes and at 220 to 320 for oil and stain, which show finer scratches. Beyond that, the silicon-carbide wet-dry sheets take over: 400 to 600 between coats of varnish, 1000 to 2000 to rub out a final coat or polish plastic. Do Best Deal readers finishing furniture will use far more 120 and 180 than anything else, which is why packs that sell single grits, like the quarter-sheet set, are worth noting.
Aluminum oxide, silicon carbide and backing
Aluminum oxide, on every pick but the Shineboc, is the general-purpose abrasive: tough, self-sharpening as it fractures, and happiest on wood, paint and mild steel. Resin-bonded and open-coat versions, as on the LotFancy and S SATC, shed dust better and clog more slowly on soft paint. Silicon carbide, on the Shineboc, is harder and sharper and cuts cleanly on finishes, plastic, glass and metal, and it is the one to use wet. Backing matters too: hook-and-loop sheets swap in seconds but cost more, plain paper needs a clamp or a block, and heavier paper weights like the D-weight on the S&F sheets resist tearing at a pointed tip. Whatever you buy, clear the dust between grits with a vacuum or a tack cloth, or the coarse grit you just removed will scratch the next pass.
What grit sandpaper should I use for furniture?
Start at 80 if the piece is rough or painted, 120 if it is already smooth, work up through 150 or 180, and stop at 180 to 220 for paint or 220 to 320 for stain and oil. Every assortment here covers that range except the wet-dry set, which starts where the others stop.
How do I know which mouse sander sheet fits my sander?
Measure the pad from the tip to the flat back, 135mm or 140mm, and count the dust holes: none, 6 or 12. The Coceca fits 140mm pads without holes, the LotFancy fits the 12-hole Black and Decker Mouse, the S SATC fits 135mm 12-hole pads and the S&F fits 140mm 6-hole Ryobi-style pads.
Can I use these sheets by hand?
Yes. The quarter-sheet pack and the wet-dry sheets are made for a block or your hand, and any hook-and-loop sheet can be used by hand in a pinch, though the backing makes it a little stiff.
What is wet-dry sandpaper for?
Finishing. Used with water, silicon carbide sheets like the Shineboc level varnish between coats, rub out a final finish, restore headlights and polish plastic and metal without clogging or dust. They are too fine for stripping wood.
Why does my sandpaper clog so fast?
Usually because the grit is too fine for the job, the surface is gummy with old paint or resin, or the dust is not being cleared. Start coarser, use open-coat or resin-bonded paper like the LotFancy or S SATC, match the dust holes to your pad, and vacuum between grits.
