Best Polishing Pads and Compounds in 2026: Buffing Pads, Backing Plates and Plastic Polish for DIY Finishing Ranked by Owners

Eight polishing supplies ranked by use, fit and owner reviews: Meguiar PlastX, Formula 1 headlight polish, cordless DA polisher kit, diamond pad kit, 5 and 7 inch backing plates, POLIWELL, Honoson.

Our top pickMeguiar's PlastX Clear Plastic Polish He…8.8Our score

Polishing is a system, not a product: a compound or polish that cuts, a pad that carries it, and a backing plate that spins the pad on a drill, grinder or polisher. Buy the wrong grit for the job and you either do nothing or burn through the finish; buy a pad without the right backing plate and it does not attach. We ranked the polishing pads, backing plates and compounds in our abrasive and finishing catalog and the related automotive and tool listings by what surface each is for (clear plastic, paint, stone, wood, resin), how it attaches (hook and loop, thread size, hand), grit range or cut, what is in the kit, and what thousands of owners report after using them on headlights, countertops and project cars.

We have not polished every surface with every one of these ourselves; the verdicts rest on the spec sheets and on the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page. For the wash and interior side of car care, our car floor mats and covers guide is the other half of a detailing weekend, and the portable jump starters guide covers the battery you flatten by leaving the doors open all afternoon. Do Best Deal ranks by review volume, rating and fit for the job.

How we picked

  • Surface stated. Clear plastic, paint, stone, tile, wood or resin, because a pad that polishes granite will wreck a clear coat.
  • Attachment stated. Hook and loop, 5/8-11 thread, 8 mm drill adapter or hand use, so you can check it fits your tool before buying.
  • Grit or cut. Grit ranges for abrasive pads, and whether a compound cuts, polishes or seals.
  • Kit completeness. Backing pads, adapters, pad counts and battery count where a tool is included.
  • Owner feedback across at least several hundred reviews on every pick, most in the thousands, with a rating of 4.1 or better.

Meguiar's PlastX Clear Plastic Polish Headlight Restoration Polish, 10 Oz
TypeClear plastic cleaner and polish, 10 ozSurfacesHeadlights, taillights, plexiglass, plastic soft-top windows, uncoated clear plasticsActionRemoves light scratches, cloudiness, yellowing and light oxidationFinishLeaves water-resistant polymersApplicationBy hand with a microfiber cloth or by machine with a foam padBrandMeguiar, 125 yearsOwner ratinga strong owner rating across tens of thousands of owner reviews

PlastX is the polish to start with on any clear plastic that has gone cloudy, and tens of thousands of owners have started there, giving it a strong owner rating. It is a fine abrasive in a gel that removes light scratches, haze, yellowing and light oxidation from headlights, taillights, plexiglass and the soft plastic windows on convertibles and boats, applied by hand with a microfiber in circular motions or by machine with a foam pad, and it leaves a water-resistant polymer film behind. The critical reviews are from people who used it on badly yellowed lenses: PlastX is a light-cut polish, so a lens that has gone opaque needs wet sanding first, and the polymer film is not a UV sealant, so the haze returns in months unless you add one. For the lenses that are merely dull, it is a ten-minute fix for very little.

Pros
  • Tens of thousands of owner reviews, the most-trusted product here
  • Works by hand; no machine needed for light haze
  • One bottle covers headlights, taillights, visors and boat windows
  • Leaves a protective polymer film
Cons
  • Light cut only; heavily yellowed headlights need sanding first
  • Protection is short-lived without a separate sealant
  • Strong rather than excellent rating; expectations on badly oxidized lenses

Formula 1 Headlight Restorer & Sealant - One Step Polish to Clean & Renew Yellowed Headlights, Windscreens, or Exterior Plastics (8 oz.)
TypeLiquid plastic polish with sealant, 8 ozSurfacesHeadlights, brake lights, turn signals, helmet visors, motorcycle windscreens, marine windowsActionCleans and seals in one step against oxidation, weathering and UVApplicationDry cloth, circular motions, buff off; no tape or sandpaperRepeatHeavily oxidized surfaces may need a second applicationOwner ratinga strong owner rating across thousands of owner reviews

Formula 1 Headlight Restorer answers the PlastX complaint about protection by putting a sealant in the bottle: it is a liquid plastic polish that cleans haze and yellowing and leaves a layer that resists oxidation, weathering and UV, applied with a dry cloth in circles and buffed off, with no taping of paint and no sandpaper. It is also marketed for brake lights, turn signals, helmet visors, motorcycle windscreens and marine windows. Thousands of owner reviews give it a strong owner rating, a notch below PlastX, and the pattern is the same: good on dull lenses, disappointing on heavily oxidized ones, where Formula 1 itself says a second application may be needed. It has less cut than PlastX for scratches, so the best use is as the finishing and sealing step after PlastX, or on its own for lenses that are only starting to fade.

Pros
  • Polish and UV sealant in one bottle, which PlastX lacks
  • No taping, sanding or tools
  • Works on visors and motorcycle screens
  • Thousands of owner reviews
Cons
  • Lower rating than PlastX; mixed results on heavy yellowing
  • Less cut than PlastX for scratches
  • Sealant durability is modest

Cordless Car Buffer Polisher kit, DA Polisher with 2*21V Batteries
ToolCordless random orbital (dual action) polisher, 8 mm throw, brushed copper motorSpeeds6 levels, 2,800 to 5,800 RPM, LED display with battery levelBatteries2 x 21V 2,000 mAh with fast chargerPads5 in backing plate; 2 x 5 in and 2 x 6 in flat sponge, 2 x 5 in wave sponge, 2 wool, 2 microfiber and 2 non-woven bonnets, 6 sanding discsWeight3.3 lb, 11.8 x 5 x 6.7 inOwner ratinga strong owner rating across hundreds of owner reviews

For someone who has never machine polished a car, the cheapest safe way in is a dual action polisher, and this cordless kit is the complete package: an 8 mm random orbital tool with six speeds from 2,800 to 5,800 RPM shown on an LED screen, two 21V batteries with a fast charger, a 5-inch backing plate, and a pad set of flat and wave sponges in 5 and 6 inches, wool pads, microfiber and non-woven bonnets and six sanding discs. Dual action oscillates as well as spins, so it is far harder to burn through clear coat than a rotary. Hundreds of owner reviews give it a strong owner rating. Be clear about what it is: a brushed motor with a proprietary battery system, fine for waxing, light polish and headlights, not a professional correction tool, and the included pads are the ones to learn on before buying better foam.

Pros
  • Complete kit: tool, two batteries, charger and 18 pads and bonnets
  • Dual action is the safe choice for a first paint polish
  • Cordless, so no cable dragging across the paint
  • Light at 3.3 pounds
Cons
  • Brushed motor and proprietary batteries; not a pro tool
  • Hundreds of reviews so far
  • Pads are starter grade; buy better ones for correction work

4 Inch Diamond Polishing Pads with 5/8-11 Backer Pad, 12PCS Wet/Dry Granite Stone Polish Pad Kit for Drill, Grinder, Polisher, 50-6000 Grit Polishing Pad for Concrete Marble Rock Countertop Quartz
Pads8 diamond resin pads: 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000, 6000 grit, plus 2 wool felt buffing padsBacker4 in hook-and-loop backer pad with 5/8-11 thread and 8 mm drill adapterSurfacesGranite, marble, quartz, concrete, terrazzo, tile, glass, natural stoneWet or dry50 to 200 grit wet or dry; 400 to 6000 grit wet onlyToolsVariable speed polisher, angle grinder, drill or rotary toolOwner ratinga strong owner rating across thousands of owner reviews

This is the kit for edge-polishing a granite countertop, bringing back a marble threshold, smoothing a concrete planter or putting a shine on a stone project, and thousands of owners have used it that way with a strong owner rating. Eight resin-bonded diamond pads step from 50 grit, which shapes and removes saw marks, through 6,000, which brings up the gloss, and two wool felt pads finish it, all on a 4-inch hook-and-loop backer that threads onto a 5/8-11 grinder or drops into a drill with the included 8 mm adapter. The coarse pads can run dry; from 400 grit up they must be run with water, which controls dust, cools the pad and is what makes the finish. Four inches is right for edges and small areas and slow on a whole slab, and diamond pads have no place near paint.

Pros
  • Full 50 to 6,000 grit progression in one kit
  • Backer pad with both grinder thread and drill adapter
  • Wool felt pads for the final gloss
  • Thousands of owner reviews
Cons
  • Fine grits must be run wet; a dry drill makes dust and burns pads
  • Four-inch pads are slow on a whole countertop
  • Not for paint or plastic

5 Inch Hook and Loop Backing Pad 5 Inch Backing Plate with 5/8-11 Threads Sanding Pad Angle Grinder Accessories Sanding Buffing Polishing,1 Pack
Size5 in hook and loopThread5/8-11, fits standard angle grindersMaterialPolyurethaneUseHolds hook-and-loop sanding discs, buffing and polishing padsInstallScrew onOwner ratingan excellent owner rating across thousands of owner reviews

A backing plate is the part people forget, and this 5-inch hook-and-loop plate on a 5/8-11 thread is the one thousands of owners rate excellent for turning an angle grinder into a disc sander and polisher. The polyurethane body has enough give to follow a gentle curve, the hook face grips standard 5-inch hook-and-loop sanding discs and foam or wool polishing pads, and it screws straight onto the grinder spindle. The caveat is the tool: most angle grinders spin far too fast for polishing paint and will burn clear coat, so this is the plate for sanding wood and metal, stone work with diamond pads and buffing hard surfaces, not for a car’s hood. It has no drill adapter, and the hook face is a consumable under heavy sanding.

Pros
  • Turns any 5/8-11 angle grinder into a sander and polisher
  • Excellent owner rating from thousands of owners
  • Polyurethane face flexes enough for curves
  • Cheap enough to keep one per grinder
Cons
  • Grinder speed is high for polishing paint; use for sanding, stone and metal
  • Fits grinders only; no drill adapter
  • Hook face wears with heavy sanding

7 inch Hook & Loop Backing Plate for Sanding Polishing Buffering Pads
Size7 in hook and loopThread5/8-11 internal thread; 8 mm drill adapter for grinders and drillsMaterialPhenolic plastic hub, molded urethane body, nylon hook faceUseHook-and-loop sanding discs, diamond pads and buffing pads on wood, metal, plastics, automobiles, stone, floors and countertopsBrandPro-Graad with product guaranteeOwner ratinga strong owner rating across hundreds of owner reviews

The 7-inch Pro-Graad plate is the backing plate for a rotary polisher or a slow-speed sander-polisher, where a big pad covers a hood or a floor quickly. It has a phenolic hub with a 5/8-11 internal thread and an 8 mm drill adapter, a molded urethane body that flexes over curves and keeps heat away from the pad, and a dense nylon hook face that holds 7-inch sanding discs, diamond pads and wool or foam buffing pads without creeping or detaching at speed. Hundreds of owner reviews give it a strong owner rating and Pro-Graad backs it with a guarantee. Match it to the tool: a 7-inch pad on a 10,000 RPM grinder is dangerous and will burn anything you touch, so this belongs on a variable-speed polisher or a drill. For a car it is the plate for cutting and finishing with wool and foam.

Pros
  • Seven inches for rotary polishers and large pads
  • Urethane body minimizes heat transfer and follows curves
  • Dense nylon hooks stop pads shifting or flying off
  • Drill adapter included
Cons
  • Hundreds of reviews
  • Seven-inch pads need a slow rotary polisher, not a grinder
  • Heavier than the 5-inch plate

POLIWELL 10 Pack 2 Inch (50mm) Foam Interface Pad, Hook and Loop Soft Foam Buffing Pad, Soft Density Buffer Backing Pad for 2 Inch Sanding Discs, Drill, Mini RO Sander for Detail Sanding
Size2 in (50 mm) diameter, 0.5 in thick, 10 packTypeSoft-density foam interface pad, hook and loop both facesUseBetween backing pad and 2 in sanding or polishing disc for curves, headlights and detail areasBenefitCushions the disc, reduces vibration, improves edge sandingToolsDrill, mini random orbital sanderOwner ratingan excellent owner rating across hundreds of owner reviews

Interface pads are the trick that makes a small drill or mini sander polish a curved headlight without flat-spotting it. These POLIWELL pads are 2-inch, half-inch-thick soft foam with hook and loop on both faces, so they sit between a hard 2-inch backing pad and the sanding or polishing disc and let the disc wrap around a lens, a spoiler edge or a piece of trim, while absorbing some vibration from the tool. Ten come in a pack, and hundreds of owner reviews give them the best owner rating here. They are strictly a detail-size accessory: you still need a 2-inch backing pad for the drill and 2-inch discs, they do nothing for a hood, and the foam compresses and tears over time, which is why ten in a pack is the right quantity. For headlight restoration with a drill, they are the missing piece.

Pros
  • Best owner rating on the page from hundreds of owners
  • Lets a hard 2-inch backing pad follow headlights, spoilers and trim
  • Ten pads for the price of one branded one
  • Reduces vibration from the tool
Cons
  • Two-inch only; useless for large panels
  • Soft foam wears and compresses with use
  • Needs a 2-inch backing pad and discs, sold separately

Best hand polishing pads for resin, pens and small parts

Honoson 30 Pcs 2x2 Inch Sanding Pads Double Sided Polishing Pads Kit

Honoson 30 Pcs 2x2 Inch Sanding Pads Double Sided Polishing Pads Kit
Count30 double-sided pads, 2 x 2 x 0.14 inGrits15 grits from 320 to 8,000 and beyond, printed on each padMaterialEVA foam, non-absorbentUseHand sanding and polishing of resin, acrylic, pen blanks, plastic, small castingsProgressionCoarse to fine for a mirror finishOwner ratinga strong owner rating across thousands of owner reviews

Not every polishing job involves a machine. The Honoson pads are 2-inch square double-sided foam sanding and polishing pads in fifteen grits from 320 up to 8,000 and finer, each printed with its grit, for taking resin castings, acrylic, pen blanks, 3D prints, knife handles and small plastic parts from scratched to glossy by hand. The EVA foam is non-absorbent, so they work wet, and the small size suits the fingertips. Thousands of owner reviews give them a strong owner rating, with most of the praise from resin and pen makers. They are a hand tool: anything larger than a palm takes a long time, the foam wears through on hard materials, and they have nothing to do with car paint. For the hobby bench, a full grit progression in one box for this price is hard to beat.

Pros
  • Fifteen grits to 8,000 for a true gloss by hand
  • Grit printed on every pad
  • Double-sided, so 30 pads is 60 faces
  • Thousands of owner reviews
Cons
  • Hand use only; slow on anything bigger than a palm
  • EVA foam pads do not last through heavy use
  • Not for car paint

Compound, polish, pad: the order of operations

A compound cuts, a polish refines, a sealant or wax protects, and the pad decides how aggressive each step is. On car paint, a cutting compound on a wool or firm foam pad removes defects, a finishing polish on a soft foam pad removes the compound haze, and a sealant goes on last by hand or with a finishing pad. On clear plastic, PlastX is the compound-and-polish step and Formula 1 or a dedicated UV sealant is the protection. On stone, the diamond pads are the abrasive progression and the felt pads with a stone polish are the finish. Skipping a step shows: compound without polish leaves haze, polish without sealant fades in months.

Matching plates, pads and tools

The attachment chain is where kits go wrong. Angle grinders take a 5/8-11 threaded backing plate; drills take an 8 mm or 1/4-inch shank adapter; dual action and rotary polishers have their own threaded spindles, usually 5/8-11 on rotaries. Hook and loop is the universal pad face, in sizes from 2 inches for detail and headlights through 5 and 6 inches for DA polishers to 7 inches for rotaries and floors. Speed matters as much as fit: a grinder at 10,000 RPM will burn paint and melt foam, so grinders get sanding discs, diamond pads and hard-surface buffing, and polishers and drills get the paint work. An interface pad between plate and disc softens a hard setup for curves.

Headlights, countertops and project parts

For headlights, the sequence that works is: mask the paint, wet sand only if the lens is heavily yellowed, PlastX by hand or on a 2-inch foam pad with an interface pad on a drill, then a UV sealant; Formula 1 can be the sealant step on lightly faded lenses. For a granite or quartz edge, the diamond kit on a variable-speed polisher, dry through 200 grit and wet from 400 to 6,000, then felt. For a first car polish, the cordless DA kit and its foam pads with a mild compound at a low speed, one panel at a time, before buying better pads. And for resin, pens and small plastic parts, the Honoson hand pads through every grit, wet, with no machine at all.

What is the difference between a polishing compound and a polish?

A compound contains coarser abrasives and cuts scratches and oxidation; a polish uses finer abrasives to remove the haze a compound leaves and bring up gloss. PlastX is a light compound and polish in one for plastic; a sealant like Formula 1 adds protection on top.

Can I polish a car with an angle grinder?

Not safely. Grinders spin too fast and burn clear coat and melt foam pads. Use a dual action polisher like the cordless kit here, or a variable-speed rotary with the 7-inch plate. Grinders are for sanding, stone and metal with the 5-inch plate.

Which backing plate fits my tool?

Angle grinders use a 5/8-11 thread, which the 5-inch and 7-inch plates and the diamond kit backer all have. Drills use the 8 mm adapter included with the 7-inch plate and the diamond kit. Dual action polishers use their own plate; the cordless kit includes a 5-inch one.

Do diamond polishing pads need water?

The coarse grits, 50 to 200, can run dry; from 400 to 6,000 they must run wet to control dust, cool the pad and produce the gloss. Use a slow drip or a spray bottle and keep the pad moving.

How do I keep restored headlights from yellowing again?

Polishing removes the oxidized layer but also any remaining factory UV coating, so the lens needs a new sealant. Apply a UV headlight sealant or the Formula 1 restorer and sealant after PlastX, reapply it every few months, and park out of direct sun when you can.
