A flap disc is the angle grinder accessory that does two jobs at once: it grinds like a hard wheel and finishes like sandpaper, because dozens of overlapping abrasive cloth flaps wear away to expose fresh grit as you work. One disc takes a weld bead down and blends it into the surrounding plate without the gouging a grinding wheel leaves. We ranked the flap discs in our abrasive and finishing catalog by the abrasive (zirconia alumina versus aluminum oxide), the grits included and how many of each, type 27 flat or type 29 conical, diameter and arbor, the rated speed, how many discs you get, and what thousands of owners report after months of fabrication, rust removal and finishing.
We have not run every disc to the core ourselves; the verdicts rest on the published specs and the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page. For the wheels that cut rather than grind, see our cut-off wheels for angle grinders guide, and for the diamond versions our diamond cutting blades guide.
How we picked
- Abrasive named. Zirconia alumina on the heavy-grinding picks, aluminum oxide on the budget assortment, nylon scour pads on the finishing discs.
- Grit and count stated. Single-grit packs for production work and assortments for the home shop, with the exact split quoted.
- Type 27 or 29. We note which, since the flat and conical profiles grind differently.
- Standard fit. 4-1/2 inch on a 7/8 inch arbor for the main picks, with a 4 inch and a 2 inch roll-lock option for other tools.
- Owner history. Every pick has hundreds of owner reviews and the top three have thousands; all sit at a strong owner rating or better.
The picks
EZARC Zirconia Flap Discs 40 Grit, 4-1/2 x 7/8-Inch, Type 29, 10-Pack

EZARC’s 40-grit zirconia flap disc is the one to buy for the work flap discs are really for: taking a weld bead down, knocking rust off plate, chamfering an edge or deburring a cut. The zirconia alumina cloth self-sharpens as it wears, so it outlasts an aluminum oxide disc several times over on steel, the type 29 conical profile is built for working at a 15 to 20-degree angle on seams and edges, and the fiberglass backing takes vibration without contaminating the surface. It is rated to 13,300 RPM on a 4-1/2-inch grinder with a 7/8-inch arbor, and you get ten. Thousands of owners rate it excellently, the best owner history on this page, and the reviews are from welders and farm shops as much as from DIYers. It is a single coarse grit, so you will still want a 60 or 80 for blending, which is where the Trivd Frol assortment or a second EZARC pack comes in.
- Thousands of owner reviews with an excellent owner rating, the best on the page
- Zirconia lasts far longer than aluminum oxide on steel
- Type 29 bevel suits weld seams and edges
- Fiberglass backing absorbs vibration and does not mark the work
- 40 grit only; you will want a finer disc for the final blend
- No type 27 version in this listing
- Ten discs is more than a one-project buyer needs
Benchmark Abrasives 4.5 inch x 7/8 inch Zirconia Type 29 Flap Discs, 40 Grit

Benchmark Abrasives makes the disc for people who grind all day. The high-density jumbo layout packs more zirconia cloth flaps onto the type 29 backing, so each disc lasts longer and keeps cutting at a consistent rate, and the cloth is European-made with a uniform grain size that owners describe as more predictable than the budget imports. It is rated for cast iron, steel, stainless, titanium and even fiberglass and wood, fits any 4-1/2 or 5-inch grinder with a 7/8-inch arbor, and is built to exceed ANSI and EU abrasive standards. Thousands of owners rate it excellently. It costs a little more per disc than the EZARC and removes stock quickly enough that a thin auto panel needs a light touch, but for a fabrication shop or a welder it is the disc that gets reordered.
- High-density jumbo flap layout means more cloth and longer life per disc
- Thousands of owner reviews with an excellent owner rating
- Rated for stainless and titanium as well as steel
- Fits every 7/8 inch arbor grinder brand listed
- Priced above the EZARC per disc
- 40 grit only
- Jumbo density removes material fast; easy to overdo a thin panel
40 Pack Flap Discs 4 1/2 for Angle Grinder Sanding Disc - Trivd Frol 40/60/80/120 Grit T29 Flap Disc, 7/8 Inch Zirconia Abrasive Grinding Wheel Disc for Metal, Wood, Stainless Steel Finishing

The Trivd Frol box is the practical answer for a home shop that does not want to buy four separate packs: 40 zirconia type 29 discs split as twenty 40-grit, ten 60, five 80 and five 120, on fiberglass backing, rated to 13,300 RPM on a 4-1/2-inch grinder. That split is sensible, since most flap disc work is coarse, and it means you can take a weld from bead to paint-ready with the same box. Hundreds of owners rate it excellently and the per-disc price is the lowest on this page. The weak spot is the finishing end: five discs each of 80 and 120 disappear quickly if you blend a lot, and it is a generic brand without the long record of EZARC or Benchmark. For a garage welder or a restoration project it is the best way to start.
- Forty zirconia discs across four grits, weighted toward the 40 you use most
- Covers grinding to finishing in one box
- Hundreds of owner reviews with an excellent owner rating
- Lowest price per disc here
- Only five each of 80 and 120, which run out first on finishing work
- Generic brand
- Forty discs is a lot to store for a hobbyist
BHA 4-1/2 x 7/8 Zirconia Flap Disc T27 Angle Grinder - 40 Grit - 10 Pack

Every other zirconia pick here is type 29, the conical disc for edges and angled work; the BHA is the type 27 flat disc you want for working flat on plate, blending a surface or feathering a repair where a conical disc would dig a groove. It is 40-grit zirconia at standard density, which is more controllable than a jumbo disc on sheet or thin tube, is rated to 13,300 RPM on a 7/8-inch arbor, is made to ANSI safety requirements, and comes in 60, 80 and 120 as well so you can build a matched set. Hundreds of owners rate it strongly, with fabrication shops and auto body work in the reviews. Its base is smaller than the two leaders and the listing is sparse, but if your grinding is flat rather than on seams, it is the right profile and the others are not.
- Type 27 flat profile for flat plate and surface blending
- Standard density is easier to control than jumbo on light work
- Hundreds of owner reviews with a strong owner rating
- Grit series lets you match a set
- Fewer reviews than the EZARC and Benchmark
- Single product image on the listing
- Standard density wears faster than Benchmark jumbo
4 Inch Flap Discs, Akamino 20 PCS 40 60 80 120 Grit Assorted Sanding Pad for Angle Grinder, Compatible with Dewalt Makita

Not every grinder is a 4-1/2 inch with a 7/8-inch arbor; plenty of compact and older tools take a 4-inch disc on a 5/8-inch arbor, and the Akamino set is the assortment for them. It gives you twenty flat aluminum oxide discs, five each of 40, 60, 80 and 120 grit, on multi-layer fiberglass backing rated to 17,000 RPM, which covers the higher speeds of small grinders. Aluminum oxide is the budget abrasive, so each disc wears faster than the zirconia discs above on hard steel, though for wood, aluminum and light rust work the difference is small. Hundreds of owners rate it strongly, the lowest on this page but still comfortably positive, and the reviews are mostly about fit and value. Check the arbor on your grinder before ordering; this is the only 4-inch pick here.
- The 4 inch, 5/8 inch arbor size for small and older grinders
- Even assortment with five of each grit
- Rated to 17,000 RPM
- Hundreds of owner reviews with a strong owner rating
- Aluminum oxide wears faster than zirconia on steel
- Will not fit a 4-1/2 inch grinder with a 7/8 inch arbor
- Lowest rating of the picks, though still strong
10Pcs 180/320 Grit Scour Flap Disc 4 1/2 inch Angle Grinder Metal Pad

A scour flap disc is the finishing cousin of the grinding disc: instead of abrasive cloth it carries more than sixty small nylon fiber pads that scrub rust, paint, oxide and corrosion off metal without removing the metal itself, leaving a bright, lightly keyed surface ready for paint or welding. NuoDunco’s ten-pack mixes 180 grit for heavy rust and 320 for general use, on a type 27 flat backing for a 4-1/2-inch grinder with a 7/8-inch arbor, and the maker is honest that the discs work best under 5,000 RPM, so a variable-speed grinder or a light touch on a single-speed one. Hundreds of owners rate it strongly and the restoration crowd in the reviews is enthusiastic. Keep expectations in line: this will not grind a weld, and the nylon shreds if you run it onto a sharp edge, but for stripping a gate or a trailer frame it is the gentler tool.
- Strips rust, paint and oxide without cutting the base metal
- Brightens metal and prepares welds for paint
- Hundreds of owner reviews with a strong owner rating
- Two grits for heavy and general cleanup
- Not a grinding disc; it will not remove a weld bead
- Best under 5,000 RPM, so a variable-speed grinder helps
- Nylon wears quickly on sharp edges
HOMO FABER 50Pcs Die Grinder Sanding Discs, 2 Inch Flap Discs Roll Lock

Where a 4-1/2-inch disc cannot go, a 2-inch roll-lock disc on a die grinder can: inside a car frame rail, around a bracket, into the corner of a weld. HOMO FABER’s kit is fifty of them, twelve each of 36, 60, 80 and 120 grit zirconia-coated discs with two quick-change holders on reinforced steel shafts, for tools running 4,500 to 24,000 RPM. Owners use them for frame rust, bracket cleanup and paint removal before welding, and hundreds of them rate the kit excellently. The discs are small and wear quickly, as any 2-inch abrasive does, and the listing muddles roll-lock and hook-and-loop wording, but the mount is a standard roll-lock. It is a specialist pick for a specialist tool, and if you own a die grinder it is the most useful box on this page.
- Fifty 2 inch discs in four grits plus two quick-change holders
- Reaches inside frames and tight spots a 4-1/2 inch disc cannot
- Zirconia fibers for rust and paint on small areas
- Hundreds of owner reviews with an excellent owner rating
- For die grinders and 2 inch angle grinders only
- Small discs wear fast
- Listing wording mixes hook-and-loop and roll-lock terms
26 Packs Angle Grinder Cutting Flap Grinding Disc Wheel 4 1/2in Inches - 20 Packs 4.5 x 1/4 x 7/8 Cut off Wheels, 3 Packs 4.5 x 7/8 60 Grit Flap Discs, 3 Packs 4.5 x 1/25 x 7/8 Grinding Wheels

This kit is here for the person who just bought their first angle grinder and wants one box that does everything. It contains twenty 4-1/2-inch cut-off wheels, three 60-grit zirconia flap discs with angled flaps for edge work, and three grinding wheels, all on 7/8-inch arbors, in a plastic case. The flap discs are the real thing, zirconia alumina rather than aluminum oxide, and 60 grit is a good single grit for cleanup. Thousands of owners rate the kit excellently, which is a remarkable base for a bundle. Be clear about what it is: only three of the 26 pieces are flap discs, and the cut-off wheels are the thick 1/4-inch style that cuts slowly compared with thin wheels. Buy it to equip a grinder, then buy the EZARC or Trivd Frol packs when the three flap discs run out, which they will.
- Thousands of owner reviews with an excellent owner rating
- One case equips a new grinder for cutting, grinding and blending
- Flap discs are zirconia, not aluminum oxide
- Storage case keeps everything together
- Only three flap discs in the kit
- Cut-off wheels are thick 1/4 inch wheels, better for grinding than clean cuts
- Not a flap disc pack if that is all you need

Zirconia or aluminum oxide?
Zirconia alumina is the abrasive to want on steel. Its grains fracture as they dull, exposing new sharp edges, so a zirconia disc keeps cutting at the same rate until the cloth is gone, and on hard or stainless steel it lasts several times as long as aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide is cheaper and perfectly good for wood, aluminum, light rust and occasional use, which is why the 4-inch Akamino assortment uses it. Of the eight picks, six are zirconia; buy the aluminum oxide set only if the 4-inch size is what your grinder needs. The scour discs are a third category, nylon fiber rather than abrasive grain, for cleaning rather than cutting.
Type 27 or type 29?
Type 27 flap discs are flat and meant to be used at a shallow angle, 0 to 15 degrees, on flat surfaces: blending, surface prep, feathering. Type 29 discs are conical, with the flaps angled so the disc bites at 15 to 25 degrees, which suits weld seams, edges, chamfers and aggressive stock removal. Most of the zirconia picks here (EZARC, Benchmark, Trivd Frol, the starter kit) are type 29 because that is what most grinder work is; the BHA and the scour discs are type 27 for flat work. If you do both, keep one of each on the bench. At Do Best Deal we would start with a 40-grit type 29 and a 60 or 80-grit type 27.
Grit, speed and safety
For flap discs, 40 grit is the workhorse: it takes a weld down and strips heavy rust. Sixty grit is the compromise for people who want one disc for grinding and a rough blend, 80 and 120 are finishing grits before paint, and the 180 and 320 scour discs are for cleaning without cutting. Every 4-1/2-inch pick is rated to at least 12,500 RPM, which covers standard grinders; the scour discs prefer under 5,000 RPM, and the 4-inch Akamino is rated to 17,000 for small high-speed tools. A flap disc is safer than a bonded grinding wheel because it cannot shatter, but it still throws sparks and grit: wear eye protection, keep the guard on, and let the disc do the work rather than leaning on it, which glazes the flaps and shortens their life.
What is a flap disc used for?
Grinding and finishing in one step: removing weld beads, deburring cut edges, chamfering, stripping rust and paint, and blending repairs. The overlapping cloth flaps wear away to expose fresh abrasive, so the disc finishes more smoothly than a grinding wheel.
What grit flap disc should I use for welds?
Start with 40 grit zirconia (EZARC, Benchmark, BHA) to remove the bead, then blend with 60 or 80 and finish with 120 before paint. The Trivd Frol 40-pack includes all four grits.
Type 27 or type 29 flap disc?
Type 27 is flat for surface blending at a shallow angle; type 29 is conical for edges, seams and aggressive removal at 15 to 25 degrees. Most of the picks here are type 29; the BHA and the scour discs are type 27.
Will these fit my angle grinder?
The 4-1/2 inch picks fit any 4-1/2 or 5 inch grinder with a 7/8 inch arbor, which covers DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, Ryobi and most others. The Akamino needs a 4 inch grinder with a 5/8 inch arbor, and the HOMO FABER discs need a die grinder or 2 inch angle grinder with a roll-lock holder.
Can a flap disc remove rust without damaging the metal?
A 40 grit zirconia disc removes rust but also some metal. For cleaning without cutting, use the NuoDunco scour flap discs, whose nylon pads strip rust, oxide and paint and brighten the surface while leaving the base metal intact.
