This sewing machine is a great little starter machine! It sews through a lot, more than my more expensive machines can, which is why I bought it. It's really basic there are no bells and whistles to it but its incredibly easy to use. There are two points that are a little tricky; first is threading the machine, I still don't know if I did it right as my thread has fallen out of the needle a couple of times. The second is the speed control. The speed really depends on how much pressure you put on the foot. You can't set the max speed like on my Janome so it takes a little getting used to. But h

Wow, I have no idea why the Brother is not more popular than the Singer HD. I originally bought the Singer and right from the start it sounded clunky and not very smooth. I figured maybe that's just how it is. After about an hour of sewing it started jamming constantly and the needle would hit the foot. I contacted Singer customer service and wow, they got back to me the same day - problem is - that was the END of their "customer service". Only had it 2 months, out of return window! The timing was off from the first use. At first it was easy sailing, then using a twin needle, after the first pant leg hem, there was a grinding noise. Clearly the needle was hitting something. The twin needle (compatible per their booklet) broke. Then it was ok for the remaining 2 months although occasionally thread broke. The main issue is the 1-step automatic buttonhole was so finicky!!! Once I finally got the hang of it the buttonhole foot, things were ok for 2 uses until the next use, I hear the grinding noise again, now with the standard needl
