PoE or Wi-Fi?
PoE (power over Ethernet) sends power and video down one Cat5e cable from the recorder to the camera. It is the most reliable option: no batteries, no Wi-Fi dropouts, and 24/7 recording. The cost is installation, because every camera needs a cable run. Wi-Fi and solar kits install in an afternoon with a drill and two screws per camera, but they record motion clips rather than a continuous timeline, and a weak signal at the far corner of the yard means missed events. Coax DVR kits like the ANNKE sit in between: still wired, cheaper, lower resolution, and useful if the house already has coax from an older system.
4K or 1080p, and how big a drive
1080p tells you a person walked past. 4K tells you what they were wearing and often reads a license plate at 30 ft. If the cameras are more than 20 ft from what you want to identify, pay for 4K or at least 5MP. Storage scales with resolution: eight 4K cameras recording continuously fill 2 TB in roughly a week before the oldest footage is overwritten, which is why the 16-channel Reolink ships with 4 TB. Motion-only recording stretches that to a month or more.
Do any of these require a subscription?
No. All five record to a hard drive in the recorder or to a microSD card in the camera, and live view and playback in the app are free. Cloud backup is offered as an optional extra by ZOSI, Reolink and ANNKE; you never have to turn it on.
Does my footage stay in my house?
Yes. With the four wired kits the video lives on the drive in the NVR or DVR and streams to your phone only when you open the app. The Gianteye kit stores clips on a microSD card inside each camera unless you enable its cloud plan. If privacy matters to you, that is the main reason to buy a system over a cloud camera.
Do I need a monitor or a PC?
Not day to day. The NVR or DVR has an HDMI port, so you can plug it into any TV for setup and for a permanent view. After that the phone app or the desktop client is all you need.
What if I need help installing it?
The kits ship with mounting screws, templates and cables (Reolink includes four 60 ft runs). Running cable through an attic is the hard part; many owners hire a low-voltage installer for an hour or two. Amazon has a 30-day return window on all of these if a kit turns out to be the wrong fit.
