The Kasa EC71 is the same TP-Link engineering as the Tapo at a lower resolution and a lower price, and 34,000 owners rate it 4.4 stars. It pans 360 degrees, tilts 113, and can automatically track a moving pet or person, which is the feature parents and dog owners mention most. Push alerts for motion, people and a crying baby are free, and it records to a microSD card. If you want a second or third camera for the kitchen and the hallway without spending much, this is it.

The third-generation Nest Cam Indoor is for the household already in the Google Home ecosystem. Its 2K HDR video handles bright windows and dark corners better than any camera here, and the new Gemini-powered alerts tell you what happened (“kids are playing in the living room”) instead of just that something moved. Video is encrypted and gated by your Google account with two-step verification. What you give up is local storage and pan-tilt: this is a fixed camera whose clips live in the cloud, and the longer history and richer notifications need a Google Home Premium plan.

eufy Security 4K Indoor Camera E30, No Subscription, Pan and Tilt
eufy puts “No Subscription” in the product name, and that is the point of the E30. It records 4K video continuously to local storage, does human and pet detection on the camera itself, and auto-tracks whatever it spots across a full 360-degree pan. The built-in spotlight gives you color night video instead of infrared gray. It is also the only pick here that works with Apple HomeKit alongside Alexa and Google. The review count is modest because the camera is newer, but the rating (4.5 stars) matches the Tapo. If the idea of a monthly fee for your own living room bothers you, start here.

Do you need a subscription?
Four of the five picks work fully without one. Tapo, Kasa and eufy give you person or pet detection, two-way audio and local recording for free; Wyze gives you local recording free but charges for person detection. The Nest Cam is the exception: it stores clips in Google’s cloud, with a short free history and a plan for more. Decide before you buy whether you are happy with a card in the camera (cheap, private, lost if the camera is stolen) or a cloud plan (monthly fee, footage survives theft, video leaves your home).
Placement and privacy
Put the camera in a corner at about head height, facing away from windows so daylight does not blow out the picture. Keep it out of bedrooms and bathrooms; a living room, nursery, kitchen or hallway covers most needs. If you have a nanny, cleaner or dog walker, tell them: many states require consent for audio recording, and a camera you have disclosed is a deterrent rather than a lawsuit. Use the app’s privacy mode when you are home so the lens physically turns away.
Which of these need a subscription?
Only the Google Nest Cam Indoor depends on the cloud, with a short free event history and Google Home Premium for more. The Tapo, Kasa and eufy cameras give you detection, alerts and local recording free. The Wyze Cam Pan v3 records locally free but charges for person detection through Cam Plus.
Does my footage stay in my home?
With the Tapo, Kasa, eufy and Wyze picks, yes: video is saved to a microSD card or on-device storage and streams to your phone only when you open the app. The Nest Cam uploads encrypted clips to Google. If keeping recordings off the internet is a priority, the eufy E30 is the strongest choice, followed by the Tapo.
Can I use one as a baby monitor?
Yes. The Tapo, Kasa and eufy have baby-cry or sound detection and two-way audio, and all four pan-tilt cameras let you check the crib from the app. Keep it plugged in out of reach and route the cord away from the crib; these are Wi-Fi cameras, so a dedicated monitor still works when the internet does not.
Do they work with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home?
