Best Replacement Laptop Chargers and AC Adapters in 2026: 5 Picks

Five adapters compared by device and owner reviews: ZOZO 90W laptop charger, pdobq Switch charger, D'Addario 9V, TMEZON 12V 2A and SoulBay universal.

Our top pickZOZO 90W AC Universal Laptop Charger for…9.0Our score

A charger dies and the device it fed is suddenly a brick. The original from the maker is often out of stock or priced like a small appliance, and the search results are a wall of near-identical black boxes. The fix is to stop shopping by brand and start shopping by the three numbers printed on the dead adapter: output voltage, output current and the plug size.

We went through the 307 AC adapters in our accessories catalog and kept five, one for each of the common “my charger died” situations: a Windows laptop, a Nintendo Switch, a guitar pedal or keyboard, a 12 V gadget such as a router or camera, and the small device whose adapter you cannot identify at all. This is a comparison of listed specifications and owner reviews, not an electrical test. Prices are not printed because they change daily, and every button opens the live Amazon page.

How we picked

  • Owner ratings of 4.3 stars or higher with at least 7,400 ratings each. Adapters either power the device or they do not, and a long run of ratings is the best evidence that the voltage and plug are what the listing says.
  • One pick per device type. We grouped the catalog by what the adapter powers and chose the most-reviewed qualifying product in each group.
  • Replacements, not travel plugs. International travel adapters, car inverters and USB phone chargers share this category and were left out.
  • Voltage, current and plug size from the listing. We quote the exact output and tip dimensions the maker publishes, because those are what you have to match.

If the laptop is a Windows machine from the past decade with a round power socket, this is the one box that is likely to fit it. The ZOZO ships with 19 barrel tips and switches automatically between 15, 16, 18.5, 19, 19.5 and 20 V depending on the tip, with a 90 W ceiling that covers the 45 W and 65 W adapters most laptops come with. It is sold as a replacement for HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Samsung, Sony and Fujitsu notebooks and Chromebooks, and the maker asks that you not use it on laptops rated above 90 W. Owners rate it 4.5 stars across more than 8,200 ratings; one repair technician keeps it for diagnosing laptops with power faults, and a grandparent likes that any visiting laptop finds a tip. It does not help with a USB-C laptop; for those, see our USB-C laptop charger guide.

Pros
  • Nineteen tips cover HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Samsung and Sony barrel plugs
  • Voltage is selected automatically by the tip, so there is nothing to set
  • Replaces 33 W to 90 W original adapters
  • 8,200+ ratings at 4.5 stars
Cons
  • Barrel tips only: no USB-C, so it will not charge a modern USB-C laptop
  • Not for laptops that need more than 90 W, such as gaming models
  • One owner found the only matching tip protruded more than expected

Switch Charger for Nintendo, AC Power Supply Adapter for Nintendo Switch
Output5 V 2 A, 9 V 2 A, 15 V 3 A (45 W max)ConnectorUSB-C, 4.8 ft cableProtocolUSB PD 3.0Dock supportWorks in Switch TV modeAlso chargesSwitch Lite, OLED, Pro Controller, Steam DeckWarranty1 year

Nintendo’s own Switch adapter is the one most households lose, and this is the most-reviewed replacement in our catalog. It is a 45 W USB-C supply with a PD 3.0 chip that steps between 5 V 2 A, 9 V 2 A and 15 V 3 A, and the 15 V profile is what the original dock requires to output to a television, which many generic USB-C chargers cannot do. The cable is attached and 4.8 feet long. The maker lists compatibility with the original Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED, plus the Pro Controller and a Steam Deck. Protection against short circuit, over-voltage and over-temperature is built in and the warranty is one year. More than 16,000 owners rate it 4.7 stars, the best score of the five picks.

Pros
  • Supplies the 15 V 3 A profile the Switch dock needs for TV mode
  • Also charges Switch Lite and OLED, the Pro Controller and a Steam Deck
  • Short-circuit, over-voltage and over-temperature protection
  • 16,200+ ratings at 4.7 stars, the highest score on this page
Cons
  • Cable is captive, so a damaged cord means replacing the whole unit
  • Listing cites a 1.5 to 2.5 hour charge; your mileage depends on use while charging
  • Not a general laptop charger despite the USB-C plug

D'Addario Accessories PW-CT-9V DC Power Adapter – Pedalboard Supply - For Pedal Board and Other Devices Requiring 9V – 800mA Max Current
Output9 V DC, 800 mA maxPolarityTip negative, sleeve positivePlug2.1 mm barrelCord72 inInput100 to 240 V ACPlug typeNEMA (US)

Guitar pedals, drum machines and many keyboards use a 9 V tip-negative supply, and this D’Addario (formerly Planet Waves) adapter is the standard one. It puts out 9 V DC at up to 800 mA through a 2.1 mm barrel with tip-negative, sleeve-positive polarity, on a 72-inch cord, from any 100 to 240 V outlet. The maker notes it also powers tip-negative keyboards. Owners rate it 4.6 stars across nearly 17,000 ratings. Reviews describe it replacing a worn Casio keyboard supply and powering a Universal Audio pedal with no added noise; one owner heard a persistent high whine from a compressor pedal, which is the sort of thing to test before a gig. Check polarity before buying: most pedals are tip-negative, but not all 9 V devices are.

Pros
  • Standard tip-negative 9 V plug used by most effects pedals
  • 800 mA runs a single pedal or several daisy-chained ones
  • Six-foot cord reaches a pedalboard from a wall outlet
  • 16,900+ ratings at 4.6 stars
Cons
  • Tip-negative only, so it will not suit tip-positive devices
  • 800 mA is not enough for a large pedalboard of digital pedals
  • One owner reported a faint whine with a compressor pedal

TMEZON 12 Volt 2A Power Adapter Supply AC to DC 2.1mm X 5.5mm Plug 12v 2 Amp Wall Plug Extra Long 8 Foot Cord LED Strip Module Light
Output12 V DC, 2 A (24 W)Plug5.5 x 2.1 mm, center positiveCord8 ftProtectionOver-current, over-voltage, short circuitTypical usesRouters, cameras, LED strips, USB hubsInputWall plug, 2-pin US

Look at the dead adapter from a router, security camera, LED strip, speaker or DVR and odds are it says 12 V, 1 A or 2 A, with a 5.5 by 2.1 mm plug and a center-positive symbol. This TMEZON unit matches that spec exactly with 2 A on tap, which also covers any 12 V device that needs less. The cord is eight feet, longer than the typical original, and protection against over-current, over-voltage and short circuit is built in. Owners rate it 4.4 stars across more than 9,200 ratings, and the reviews read like a list of rescued gadgets: an indoor Vivint camera, a TiVo DVR, a VoIP adapter, a retro computer and a Novation keyboard controller. Confirm your plug is 5.5 x 2.1 mm; if it is not, the SoulBay below covers more sizes.

Pros
  • The most common DC spec there is: 12 V, 2 A, 5.5 x 2.1 mm center positive
  • Eight-foot cord, longer than most originals
  • Owners report it reviving a Vivint camera, a TiVo DVR, a VoIP box and a Novation keyboard
  • 9,200+ ratings at 4.4 stars
Cons
  • One fixed plug, so it does not fit 5.5 x 2.5 mm or smaller sockets
  • Capped at 2 A; a device rated 3 A or more needs a bigger supply
  • One long-term owner saw it degrade after three years on LED lamps

SoulBay 24W Universal AC/DC Adapter 12V 9V 7.5V 6V 5V 4.5V 3V Regulated Switching Power Supply with 8 Selectable Plugs for LED Strip Light Camera Keyboard Speaker Scale Recorder Massager, 2A Output

Sometimes the dead adapter belonged to a scale, a baby monitor, a trail camera or a massager, and nobody sells a direct replacement. A universal supply solves that if you can read the device label. The SoulBay offers seven output voltages from 3 V to 12 V, chosen with a small key that locks the selector, and eight tips covering the common barrel sizes from 5.5 x 2.1 mm down to 2.5 x 0.7 mm, plus Micro-USB and a bare LED terminal. It delivers up to 2 A, has a five-foot cord and includes four kinds of protection. The maker is clear about its limits: center-positive polarity only, no USB-C, no laptops, nothing above 12 V. Owners rate it 4.3 stars across more than 7,400 ratings. It is the adapter to keep in a drawer for the next small gadget that loses its brick.

Pros
  • Seven voltages and eight tips cover most 3 V to 12 V household electronics
  • Voltage selector locks with a key so it cannot be knocked to the wrong setting
  • Over-voltage, over-current, short-circuit and over-temperature protection
  • 7,400+ ratings at 4.3 stars
Cons
  • Center positive only; tip-negative devices like most guitar pedals are out
  • Not for USB-C devices, laptops or anything above 12 V or 2 A
  • You must set the voltage correctly yourself; a wrong setting can damage the device

What to look for in a replacement adapter

Match the voltage exactly. The output voltage printed on the old adapter (12 V, 19 V, 9 V) must be the same on the replacement. Too low and the device will not run; too high and it can be damaged. The ZOZO handles this automatically by tip; on the SoulBay you set it by hand and lock it.

Current can be equal or higher, never lower. A device that came with a 12 V 1 A adapter will run happily on a 12 V 2 A one, because it only draws what it needs. The reverse is not true. The TMEZON’s 2 A covers every 12 V device rated 2 A or less.

Measure the plug. Barrel plugs are described by outer and inner diameter: 5.5 x 2.1 mm is the most common, 5.5 x 2.5 mm looks identical but fits loosely, and smaller sizes such as 3.5 x 1.35 mm are used on compact devices. The SoulBay’s eight tips cover the usual sizes; the TMEZON has one.

Check polarity. The symbol on the label shows whether the center pin is positive or negative. Most consumer electronics are center positive, which is what the TMEZON and SoulBay provide. Most guitar pedals are center negative, which is what the D’Addario provides. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a replacement does not work.

USB-C changes the rules. A USB-C device negotiates its own voltage with the charger, so what matters is the wattage and the PD profiles offered. The Switch dock specifically needs 15 V at 3 A, which the pdobq supplies. For a USB-C laptop, see our USB-C laptop charger guide.

Cord length is a convenience you will notice daily. The TMEZON runs eight feet, the D’Addario six, the SoulBay five. If the outlet is far from the shelf, that matters more than any other spec.

Can I use a universal charger on my laptop?

Yes, if the laptop has a round barrel socket and is rated at 90 W or less. The ZOZO 90W ships 19 tips and selects 15 to 20 V automatically. It will not work on laptops that charge over USB-C or gaming laptops that need more than 90 W.

Will any USB-C charger work with a Nintendo Switch dock?

No. The dock needs a USB PD charger that offers 15 V at 3 A to output to a TV. The pdobq Switch charger provides that profile, along with 5 V and 9 V for handheld charging and controllers.

Does a 2 A adapter damage a device that came with a 1 A adapter?

No, as long as the voltage and polarity match. A device draws only the current it needs, so a 12 V 2 A adapter like the TMEZON is a safe replacement for a 12 V 1 A original. Never use a higher voltage than the original.

What does center positive or tip negative mean on a power adapter?

It describes which part of the barrel plug carries the positive voltage. Most consumer gadgets are center positive, which the TMEZON and SoulBay supply. Most guitar pedals are tip negative, which the D'Addario PW-CT-9V supplies. The symbol is printed on the device label; match it.

Bottom line

Read the label on the dead adapter, then buy by device: the ZOZO 90W for a Windows laptop with a round plug, the pdobq 45 W charger for a Nintendo Switch, the D’Addario PW-CT-9V for pedals and tip-negative keyboards, the TMEZON for anything 12 V with a 5.5 x 2.1 mm plug, and the SoulBay universal for the small gadget whose original you cannot find anywhere.
