Best Wired Security Cameras in 2026: Plug-In and PoE Picks Ranked by Owners

Eight wired security cameras, plug-in Wi-Fi and PoE, ranked by video, night vision, detection, storage and owner reviews: Tapo C120 and C500, Kasa KC420WS and KC400, Reolink RLC-510A and RLC-810A.

Our top pickTapo 2K+ Indoor/Outdoor Wired Security C…8.8Our score

A wired camera is the one that never needs charging, never sleeps, and records every second if you want it to. The trade is a cable: either a power adapter to a nearby outlet with video over Wi-Fi, or a single Ethernet cable carrying power and video together, which is what PoE means. Both kinds are cheaper per camera than battery models, sharper because they can afford a bigger sensor, and the only kinds that can record 24/7. We ranked the plug-in and PoE cameras in our cameras catalog by resolution and night vision, how the camera decides what deserves an alert, whether it can record continuously and to what, indoor or outdoor rating, and what thousands of owners report after months on a wall.

We have not wired every one of these ourselves; the verdicts rest on the spec sheets and on the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page. For full multi-camera recorder kits see our PoE security camera systems guide, and for cameras that run without any cable, our battery-powered security cameras guide.

How we picked

  • A cable, by design. Every pick runs on mains power through an adapter or on PoE, so it can stream and record continuously.
  • 2K or better. The lowest resolution on the page is the 1080p pan-tilt Tapo C500, kept for its rating; everything else is 2K, 5MP or 4K.
  • Free smart detection. Person detection with no subscription on every pick, and vehicle, pet or animal filtering on most.
  • Local 24/7 recording. A microSD slot on every pick, plus NVR, FTP or NAS on the PoE cameras.
  • Owner ratings of 4.2 stars or better and at least a thousand reviews each.

The picks

Best wired security camera overall

Tapo 2K+ Indoor/Outdoor Wired Security Camera, Baby Monitoring, C120

Tapo 2K+ Indoor/Outdoor Wired Security Camera, Baby Monitoring, C120
Video2K QHD 4MPNight visionStarlight color with two spotlights, or invisible infrared to 30 ftDetectionPerson, pet and vehicle AI with no feeBodyIP66, magnetic base, indoor or outdoorStoragemicroSD or optional Tapo Care cloudPowerPlug-in adapter, Wi-Fi

The C120 is the wired camera that suits the most places, which is why it leads. It is small enough for a bookshelf and sealed to IP66 for a porch, and its magnetic base clamps to any steel surface so the install is often no more than a cable run. Video is 2K at 4MP, night vision is color under its two small spotlights or a sensitive starlight sensor, and an invisible infrared mode drops the red glow for a bedroom. Person, pet and vehicle detection runs on the camera with no plan, clips go to a microSD card, and Tapo Care cloud is optional. It won PCMag’s Editors’ Choice for value in 2024 and about 5,400 owners rate it 4.4 stars. The only thing it cannot do is turn; for that, the C500 below.

Pros
  • 2024 PCMag Editors Choice for value
  • Magnetic base sticks to a railing, a frame or a fridge
  • Color night vision with spotlights, or invisible IR for a nursery
  • 4.4 stars from about 5,400 owners
Cons
  • Needs an outlet within cable reach outdoors
  • Fixed lens; no pan or tilt
  • Tapo app is simpler than Reolink for power users

#2
Best wired outdoor Wi-Fi camera

Kasa 2K+ Outdoor Wired Security Camera, KC420WS

4.4 · 4,848 ratings
8.8Our score
Kasa 2K+ Outdoor Wired Security Camera, KC420WS
Video2K 4MPNight visionStarlight sensor for low light, infrared in the darkDetectionAI person and motion detectionBodyIP65 outdoorAudioTwo-way talk with built-in sirenStoragemicroSD with 24/7 recording, optional Kasa cloud

The KC420WS is TP-Link’s other 2K outdoor camera, sold under the Kasa name, and it is the pick when you want a conventional wall-mounted bullet rather than the C120’s magnetic puck. It records 2K 4MP video around the clock to a microSD card, its starlight sensor holds colour and detail in low light before switching to infrared, and AI person detection trims the alerts to the ones that matter. There is two-way talk and a siren you can trigger from the Kasa app, and the body is sealed to IP65. It lacks the C120’s pet and vehicle filtering and its IP66 seal, which is why it sits second, but about 4,800 owners rate it 4.4 stars and it has been on sale longer, so the firmware is mature. Note that Kasa and Tapo cameras live in different apps, so pick one family if you plan to add more.

Pros
  • Continuous 24/7 recording to a card
  • Starlight sensor keeps detail in dusk light
  • Siren and two-way talk
  • 4.4 stars from about 4,800 owners
Cons
  • IP65 rather than IP66
  • No vehicle or pet filtering, just person and motion
  • Kasa and Tapo are the same company but separate apps

Tapo 1080P Outdoor Wired Pan/Tilt Security Wi-Fi Camera, 360° View, Motion Tracking, Works with Alexa & Google Home, Night Vision, Free AI Detection, Cloud & SD Card Storage(up to 512GB), Tapo C500…

The C500 is a 1080p camera that outranks several 2K ones because of what it does with its pixels: it pans a full 360 degrees and tilts 130, and when its free person detection spots someone it turns to follow them across the yard. Night vision reaches about 98 feet, the furthest on this page, two-way audio comes with a custom recorded alarm, and a physical privacy mode pulls the lens inside the housing. Storage is a microSD card up to 512GB with Tapo Care as an option. Its resolution is the lowest here and the night image is infrared grey rather than color, which is why the 2K C520WS exists as a step-up, but about 7,000 owners give it 4.5 stars, the best rating on the page. Our pan-tilt security cameras guide compares its rivals.

Pros
  • The best-rated camera here at 4.5 stars from about 7,000 owners
  • Pans 360 degrees and tracks a person automatically
  • 98 ft night vision and a 512GB card limit
  • Physical lens shutter for privacy
Cons
  • 1080p only
  • Infrared night vision, not color
  • Needs an outdoor outlet

#4
Best wired indoor camera

Kasa 2K+ Indoor Wired Security Camera, Baby & Pet Monitor, KC400

The KC400 is the fixed indoor pick: a small 2K camera with a 130-degree lens that sees most of a room from a shelf, infrared night vision to about 30 feet, and detection for people, motion and sound that you can restrict to four activity zones, all without a plan. It records continuously or in clips to a microSD card up to 256GB, and because it is a Kasa device it plugs into Kasa Smart Actions, so a detected motion can switch on a Kasa bulb or plug. It is indoor only and does not move, which is why the Tapo C200 wins our indoor pan-tilt guide, but as a fixed camera for a hallway, a nursery or a pet corner it has the best rating in its class, 4.4 stars from about 2,750 owners. Our indoor security cameras guide covers more.

Pros
  • 2K indoor camera at a budget price
  • Person and sound detection free, four activity zones
  • Links to Kasa plugs and bulbs for automations
  • 4.4 stars from about 2,750 owners
Cons
  • Indoor only
  • 256GB card limit
  • No pan or tilt

Septekon 2K Home Security Cameras 4 Pack, 2.4G Wired WiFi Security Camera Outdoor with Night Vision, Two-Way Audio, IP66, Motion Detection Alarm, Dual Antenna, Black
Video2K 3MP (2304 x 1296)Night visionEight infrared LEDsDetectionAI motion detection with sirenBodyIP66, dual Wi-Fi antennasAudioTwo-way talk, up to 8 usersStoragemicroSD or cloud with AES-256 encryption

Septekon’s four-pack is the cheap way to put a plug-in camera on every side of a house. Each is a 2K 3MP bullet with eight infrared LEDs, an IP66 body, two-way talk, a siren and a pair of antennas that owners say reach further across a garden than single-antenna rivals. AI motion detection sends the alerts, up to eight people can share the cameras, and clips go to a microSD card or an encrypted cloud. It is 2.4GHz only, night vision is infrared rather than color, and the app is the usual white-label affair, which is why it ranks below the branded cameras despite the value. About 2,000 owners rate the set 4.2 stars. If you would rather have four cameras on Ethernet with a recorder, our PoE security camera systems guide is the better list.

Pros
  • Four IP66 outdoor cameras for the price of one branded camera
  • Dual antennas hold 2.4GHz Wi-Fi at the end of a garden
  • Two-way talk and a siren on each camera
  • 4.2 stars from about 2,000 owners
Cons
  • 2.4GHz only
  • Infrared night vision, no color
  • Generic app and support

Plug-in Wi-Fi or PoE?

A plug-in camera needs an outlet within reach of its adapter cable, usually three metres, and sends video over Wi-Fi; it is the easy install for a porch, a garage or any room. A PoE camera needs one Ethernet cable back to a PoE switch, injector or NVR, which carries both power and video over up to 100 metres; it is the harder install and the better camera, because the stream never drops, the resolution is not limited by Wi-Fi bandwidth, and a recorder can keep weeks of continuous video from several cameras. The Tapo, Kasa, Septekon and the Reolink PTZ here are plug-in; the two Reolink bullets are PoE. If you are going to drill through a wall anyway, running Ethernet instead of looking for an outlet is usually the smarter hole.

Night vision: infrared, starlight and spotlights

Wired cameras can afford night vision that battery cameras cannot. Infrared is the baseline and every pick has it; the Reolink 510A reaches about 100 feet and the Tapo C500 about 98. Starlight sensors, on the Tapo C120 and Kasa KC420WS, hold color in dusk and street light before infrared kicks in. Spotlights, on the C120 and the Reolink PTZ, light the scene so the image stays in color all night at the cost of advertising the camera. For a driveway where you want a plate number, the 4K Reolink in infrared will usually beat a 2K camera in color; for a porch where you want to know a jacket was red, the C120 is the pick. Our 4K security cameras guide goes deeper on resolution.

Storage and subscriptions

Every camera on this page records to a microSD card with no plan, and all of them can record continuously because they never worry about a battery. The Tapo and Kasa cameras offer cloud as an option; the Reolinks add NVR, FTP and, on the 510A, NAS, which is what you want if you have a home server or more than three cameras. Smart detection is free on every pick: person on all eight, vehicle on the Tapo C120 and the Reolinks, pet or animal on the C120, the 510A and the PTZ. Nothing here needs a subscription for any feature that matters, which is why none of the cloud-first brands appear; our security cameras without a subscription guide explains that choice.

What does PoE mean on a security camera?

Power over Ethernet. One network cable from a PoE switch, injector or NVR carries both power and video, so the camera needs no outlet and no Wi-Fi. The two Reolink bullets here are PoE; the rest plug into a power adapter and use Wi-Fi.

Can a wired security camera record 24/7?

Yes, that is the main advantage over battery cameras. Every pick here records continuously to a microSD card, and the Reolinks also record to an NVR, FTP or NAS.

Do wired cameras need a subscription?

None of these eight do. Person detection and local recording are free on all of them; cloud storage is an optional extra on the Tapo, Kasa and Septekon cameras.

How far can the power cable run on a plug-in camera?

Typically about 3 metres from the adapter, and the adapter itself must stay dry, so plan on an outlet inside the garage or under cover. PoE runs up to 100 metres on a single cable.

Which wired camera is best for reading licence plates?

The 4K Reolink RLC-810A on PoE, or the 4K dual-lens PTZ whose telephoto lens zooms on vehicles. Plates need resolution and a narrow angle, not color night vision.
