Every few years the plugs change and a perfectly good device loses its place in the living room: a Fire TV Stick with nowhere to go on a 2004 tube television, or a Wii, PS2 or VCR with yellow, red and white plugs facing a new TV that only has HDMI. A small powered converter box fixes either problem for less than a takeaway dinner, as long as you buy one that goes in the right direction. We ranked the converters and adapters in our televisions catalog by which way they convert, what resolution they accept and put out, whether they need their own power, what cables come in the box, and what thousands of owners report after hooking them up.
We have not wired every one of these ourselves; the verdicts rest on the spec sheets and on the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change daily; every button opens the live Amazon page. If the goal is simply to make an old TV smart, our streaming devices guide covers the sticks these boxes feed, and our Fire TV and Roku remotes guide covers lost remotes.
How we picked
- Direction stated plainly. None of these boxes work backwards, so each pick is labelled HDMI-to-analog or analog-to-HDMI and the paragraph repeats it.
- 1080p in, standard definition out (or the reverse) with NTSC and PAL switching where it matters.
- Powered converters only. A chip that converts digital to analog needs USB power; the picks that include a power adapter are noted, as are the ones that do not.
- Cables in the box where possible, so the converter works on the day it arrives.
- Owner ratings of 4.1 stars or better, and at least 330 reviews.
The picks
Composite AV to HDMI Adapter Converter, Supports 720P to 1080P Output, USB Powered, for TV Stick, PC, DVD, HDTV

This is the converter for the drawer of old things with yellow, red and white plugs: a VCR, a DVD player, a Wii, a PlayStation 2 or an N64. It takes composite video and stereo audio, converts them to a digital HDMI signal and upscales to 720p or 1080p so a modern television will accept and display it. It is powered over the included USB cable, from a TV port or a phone charger, and there is nothing to install. The picture is still a standard-definition picture, now shown on a big screen; the converter does not add detail, it just lets the TV see the signal. It cannot go the other way; for a streaming stick into an old TV you want the Dingsun below. With 8,000 ratings at 4.2 stars it is the safe buy for retro gaming and old tapes.
- 8,000 owners at 4.2 stars, the most-reviewed converter here
- Upscales to 720p or 1080p so a new TV accepts it
- Tiny box, USB powered from the TV
- No software or setup
- Does not work in reverse
- Picture is only as good as the standard-definition source
- Needs a powered USB port or phone charger
Dingsun HDMI to RCA Converter with HDMI Cable and Power Adapter - Compatible for Apple TV, Android TV Box, Roku, Fire Stick, DVD, Blu-ray Player

The Dingsun HDMI to RCA box is the best way to put a Roku, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV or Blu-ray player on a television that only has the yellow, red and white sockets. It accepts HDMI up to 1080p and outputs composite video with stereo audio, and unlike many rivals it ships complete: an HDMI cable, a USB power cable and a wall adapter, so you are not hunting for a spare charger. The result is a standard-definition picture, which on a tube TV is exactly what the set can show anyway. Some 4K sticks need their resolution set to 1080p before the converter locks on, which accounts for most setup complaints. It only goes one way. Owners rate it 4.3 stars from 2,300 reviews.
- 2,300 owners at 4.3 stars
- Everything in the box: HDMI cable and a real power adapter
- Takes 1080p sources without complaint
- Works with Roku, Fire Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast
- Output is standard definition by definition
- Does not work backwards
- Some HDR sticks need their output forced to 1080p first
Dingsun HDMI to AV/RCA/Composite Converter,Support PAL/NTSC/1080P for Roku/Fire Stick/PS4/Xbox/Spectrum Box/Old Sanyo TV/Old LG TV/Old CRT

This is the same Dingsun converter chip in a leaner package: HDMI in, composite out, with an NTSC and PAL switch, but without the HDMI cable or wall adapter of the pick above. If you already have a spare phone charger and an HDMI lead, it is the cheaper way to get a Fire Stick, Roku, PS4 or cable box onto an old CRT. It handles 1080p input at 50 or 60Hz, though the listing is honest that some sources show stripes or no signal until you drop them to 720p or 480p, which takes a minute in the device menu. Like every box here it does not work in reverse. Owners rate it 4.3 stars across 2,300 reviews, so the choice comes down to whether you want the cables in the box.
- 2,300 owners at 4.3 stars
- NTSC and PAL switch for imported sets
- Smaller and cheaper than the rank two box
- Works with game consoles and cable boxes
- No power adapter in the box, only the cable
- Some sources need 720p or 480p for a stable picture
- No HDMI cable included
HDMI to RCA Cable, HDMI to RCA Converter Adapter Cable, 1080P HDMI to AV 3RCA CVBs Composite Video Audio Supports for Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, Chromecast, PC, Laptop, Xbox, HDTV, DVD

If the thought of a converter box, an HDMI cable, a USB cable and a wall wart makes you tired, this all-in-one cable has the HDMI to RCA chip built into the lead itself. One end plugs into a Fire Stick, Roku, Chromecast, console or laptop (an HDMI female coupler is included for sticks), the other end splits into yellow, red and white plugs for the old TV, and a short USB tail takes 5V power from a charger. It accepts anything from 480i to 1080p and does not support 3D or reverse conversion. The fixed length means less freedom than a box, and there is no NTSC/PAL switch. For a wall-mounted older TV where every cable shows, its tidiness is the point, and 1,700 owners rate it 4.2 stars.
- One cable replaces a box plus two leads
- 1,700 owners at 4.2 stars
- Includes an HDMI coupler to extend from a stick
- Tidy behind a wall-mounted TV
- Still needs USB power from a charger
- Fixed cable length limits placement
- No PAL/NTSC switch
Dingsun HDMI to S-Video Converter HDMI to RCA Adapter Support 720P/1080p for PC Laptop Xbox PS3 TV STB VHS VCR Blue-Ray DVD

S-Video was the better analog connection on late-1990s televisions and some older projectors and monitors, and this Dingsun box is the pick for a set that has the round four-pin socket. It takes HDMI from a Roku, Apple TV, console or laptop and outputs either S-Video or composite with stereo audio, switchable between NTSC and PAL, and it arrives with the HDMI cable, USB cable and power adapter. The one real limit is that it cannot drive S-Video and composite at the same time, so you pick one. On many old sets the gain of S-Video over composite is modest, so buy this only if yours has the socket. Owners rate it 4.2 stars from 1,200 reviews.
- The only pick with an S-Video output
- Ships with HDMI cable and power adapter
- NTSC and PAL switch
- 1,200 owners at 4.2 stars
- Cannot output S-Video and composite simultaneously
- S-Video gains little over composite on most old sets
- Costs more than the plain HDMI to RCA boxes
RCA to HDMI Converter, AV to HDMI cable, 3 RCA CVBS Composite to 1080P HDMI AV Adapter Supporting PAL NTSC for PC, Laptop, TV, STB, VHS, VCR Camera, DVD Etc

This is the cable version of the rank one box: composite RCA in, HDMI out, with the leads attached so there is nothing else to buy. It upscales the analog source to 1080p at 60Hz and accepts a wide list of broadcast formats including PAL, both NTSC variants and SECAM, which makes it a good choice for imported consoles or a camcorder from abroad. Setup is plugging in both ends and powering it from USB. Its review base is the smallest here at about 340, with a 4.1-star average, so the rank one box with 8,000 reviews is the lower-risk choice if you do not mind separate cables. For a retro console tucked next to the TV where a single tidy lead matters, this is the one.
- Cable form: no separate HDMI or RCA leads to buy
- Handles PAL, NTSC and SECAM sources
- Upscales to 1080p
- Plug and play
- Only 340 reviews
- Fixed lead length
- Needs USB power like every converter
Dingsun 4In-4Out Converter, 3 Way HDMI 2.0 + RCA to 2 Way HDMI Converter for Fire Stick, Roku, N64, Wii, PS2/3/4/5, Xbox, Switch

The Dingsun 4-in 2-out is for the gaming shelf: three HDMI 2.0 inputs for a PS5, Switch and Xbox, plus one composite input for a Wii, N64, PS2 or VCR, all feeding two HDMI outputs so a TV and a capture box or second screen get the same picture. Modern consoles pass through at up to 4K 60Hz, the analog input is converted and can be switched between 4:3 and 16:9, and a remote and a front button change sources. It is housed in metal and rated 4.3 stars by about 330 owners. It costs several times what a single converter does and offers only one analog socket, so it makes sense only when you are out of HDMI ports and have one old console to keep alive.
- Switch and converter in one box
- Passes 4K 60Hz from modern consoles
- Metal case and a remote
- 330 owners at 4.3 stars
- Costs several times more than a single converter
- Only one analog input
- Overkill if you own one old device

Which direction do you need?
Look at the television, not the device. If the TV has HDMI and the device has yellow, red and white plugs (VCR, DVD, Wii, PS2, N64, camcorder), you need AV to HDMI: the rank one box or the rank six cable. If the TV only has the colored sockets and the device is a Fire Stick, Roku, Apple TV or modern console, you need HDMI to AV: the Dingsun boxes or the all-in-one cable. None of these work backwards, and the listings say so because buying the wrong direction is the main cause of returns. If a TV has an S-Video socket, the Dingsun S-Video box is the only pick that uses it.
Resolution, NTSC and PAL
Converting does not add quality. An HDMI to AV box outputs standard definition because that is all a composite socket carries, and an AV to HDMI box upscales a 480i source so a modern TV accepts it, but the detail stays 480i. Expect soft text on a Fire Stick menu through a tube TV; video looks fine. NTSC is the North American standard and PAL the European one; the Dingsun boxes have a switch, and United States owners must set NTSC or get a black-and-white or rolling picture. Some 4K sticks also need their output locked to 1080p before a converter will sync.
Power and cables
Every converter here contains a chip that needs 5V over USB. The rank two Dingsun and the S-Video box include a wall adapter and an HDMI cable; the budget Dingsun and the two cables include a USB lead but expect a phone charger or a TV USB port. Some TV ports switch off in standby or are too weak, which shows up as a flickering picture; a phone charger cures it. The two cable-style picks remove the separate leads entirely, which is why they suit a wall-mounted set.
Can I use an HDMI to RCA converter backwards to connect a Wii to a new TV?
No. Every converter on this page works in one direction only. A Wii, PS2, VCR or DVD player with yellow, red and white plugs needs an AV to HDMI converter such as the rank one box or the rank six cable.
Will a Fire TV Stick work on an old tube TV through one of these?
Yes. Plug the Stick into an HDMI to RCA converter (the Dingsun boxes or the all-in-one cable), power the converter over USB and connect the yellow, red and white plugs to the TV. Set the Stick to 1080p or lower if the picture does not appear.
Why is the picture black and white or rolling?
The converter is set to PAL on an NTSC television or the reverse. Flip the NTSC/PAL switch on the Dingsun boxes. The all-in-one cable has no switch and is NTSC only.
Do these converters improve the picture quality of old consoles?
No. An AV to HDMI converter upscales the signal so a modern TV accepts it, but a 480i source stays 480i in detail. It will look watchable, not sharp. Dedicated retro upscalers cost far more.
Do I need a power adapter?
Every converter needs 5V USB power. The rank two Dingsun and the S-Video box include a wall adapter; the others include a USB cable and expect a phone charger or a TV USB port. If the picture flickers from a TV port, use a charger.
