Best Laptops for Kids and Schoolwork in 2026: Chromebooks and Windows Picks Ranked by Parents

Eight school laptops ranked by durability, battery, software and parent reviews: HP Chromebook 14 (two), Lenovo Chromebook 14 touch, IdeaPad Slim 3i, HP 15 touch, Flex 5i Chromebook Plus and HP 14.

Our top pick18.9Our score

A laptop for a child has a different job from a laptop for an adult. It needs to survive being carried in a backpack and dropped off a bed, last a school day on one charge, run Google Classroom or Microsoft Office without fuss, and cost little enough that losing it is an annoyance rather than a disaster. Speed matters less than battery and durability, and a sharp screen matters more than a fast chip. We ranked the laptops in our laptops catalog that fit that brief, Chromebooks and Windows machines alike, by build and battery claims, screen, storage, included software and what thousands of parents and students report in their reviews.

We have not put these through a school year ourselves; the verdicts rest on the spec sheets and on the owner review history. Prices are not printed because they change weekly, and every button opens the live Amazon page. For older students, see our guides to laptops for college students and 2-in-1 touchscreen laptops.

How we picked

  • Battery that lasts a school day. Every pick claims all-day battery; the HP Chromebooks quote 13 to 14 hours.
  • Durability or portability. Light weight, military-standard testing or a rigid Chromebook build.
  • The right software. Chromebooks for Google Classroom schools, Windows with Office included where a school needs it.
  • A screen that is easy on young eyes. Anti-glare on most picks, Full HD on the Lenovo and HP 15 models, touch on three.
  • Parent and student ratings of 4.1 stars or better, with 700 to 4,000 reviews each. Gaming laptops and anything rated under 4.0 were excluded.

The picks

HP Chromebook 14 Laptop, Intel Celeron N4000 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 32 GB eMMC, 14 HD Display, Chrome OS, Lightweight Computer with Webcam and Dual Mics (14a-na0021nr, 2021)
ProcessorIntel Celeron N4000 with UHD Graphics 600Memory4GB RAMStorage32GB eMMC plus Google DriveDisplay14-inch HD 1366 x 768, micro-edge, anti-glareBatteryUp to 13 hours 30 minutes of streamingSoftwareChrome OS, webcam and dual microphones

The HP Chromebook 14 is the laptop more parents have bought and reviewed than any other in our catalog, with close to 4,000 ratings averaging 4.4 stars, and the reasons are plain. Chrome OS updates itself, blocks malware by design and works with the Google Classroom accounts most schools issue. HP quotes up to 13 and a half hours of battery, enough for a school day and homework, and the 14-inch anti-glare screen, webcam and dual microphones cover online classes. The Celeron N4000 and 4GB of RAM are slow by adult standards and the 32GB eMMC relies on Google Drive for storage, but a child doing Docs, Slides, Khan Academy and YouTube will not notice. The screen is HD rather than Full HD, which is our main reservation. For elementary and middle school this is the sensible default.

Pros
  • Nearly 4,000 owners at 4.4 stars, the most-trusted school laptop here
  • Up to 13.5 hours of battery
  • Chrome OS is simple, secure and hard for a child to break
  • Light and cheap enough to replace if it is lost
Cons
  • 32GB of storage is small, so it relies on the cloud
  • 1366 x 768 screen is not sharp
  • Celeron N4000 is slow with many tabs open

HP Chromebook 14 Laptop, Intel Celeron N4120, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB eMMC, 14 HD Display, Chrome OS, Thin Design, Long Battery Life (14a-na0226nr, 2022, Mineral Silver)
ProcessorIntel Celeron N4120, 4 cores, UHD Graphics 600Memory4GB RAMStorage64GB eMMCDisplay14-inch HD 1366 x 768, micro-edge, anti-glareBatteryUp to 14 hours, HP Fast Charge 0 to 50 percent in about 45 minutesAudioCustom-tuned stereo speakers

This is the newer, slightly better HP Chromebook 14. The Celeron N4120 is a quad-core chip, a useful step up from the dual-core N4000 when a student has a video call and ten tabs open, and storage doubles to 64GB so more school files and offline videos fit on the machine. HP quotes up to 14 hours of battery and Fast Charge that takes it from empty to half in about 45 minutes, which is handy on a rushed school morning. The 14-inch anti-glare HD screen, custom-tuned stereo speakers and the thin, light body are the same family as the pick above. It still has 4GB of RAM and an HD rather than Full HD panel. More than 3,000 owners rate it 4.3 stars. If the price gap to the N4000 model is small, buy this one; the extra storage and cores are worth it.

Pros
  • Quad-core N4120 and 64GB, double the storage of the N4000 model
  • Up to 14 hours of battery with 45-minute fast charge
  • More than 3,000 owners at 4.3 stars
  • Thin, light and anti-glare
Cons
  • Still a 1366 x 768 screen
  • 4GB of RAM
  • Chrome OS only; no Windows software

Lenovo Flagship Chromebook, 14 FHD Touchscreen Slim Thin Light Laptop Computer, 8-Core MediaTek Kompanio 520 Processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi 6, Chrome OS, Abyss Blue
ProcessorMediaTek Kompanio 520, 8 coresMemory4GB RAMStorage64GB eMMC, microSD slotDisplay14-inch Full HD 1920 x 1080 IPS touchscreenWirelessWi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1Weight2.86 lb, 0.73 inches thin

Lenovo’s 14-inch Chromebook fixes the one thing wrong with the HP Chromebooks: the screen. It has a Full HD 1920 x 1080 IPS panel, so text is sharp and viewing angles are wide, and it is a touchscreen, which younger kids who grew up on tablets find natural. The MediaTek Kompanio 520 is an eight-core ARM processor designed for long battery life rather than speed; it is fine for Classroom, video and Android apps, and the fanless design is silent. At 2.86 pounds it is the lightest laptop on this page, and Wi-Fi 6 plus a microSD slot for extra storage are welcome. Ports are limited to one USB-A, one USB-C and a headphone jack. It has 1,400 reviews at 4.2 stars; a few owners found it sluggish with many tabs, the usual 4GB complaint.

Pros
  • Full HD IPS touchscreen, the sharpest Chromebook screen here
  • Only 2.86 pounds
  • Wi-Fi 6 and a microSD slot
  • 1,400 owners at 4.2 stars
Cons
  • MediaTek processor is built for battery life, not speed
  • 4GB of RAM
  • Only one USB-A and one USB-C port

Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i 15.6 FHD Laptop with Microsoft Office Included, Intel N100, 4GB DDR5, 128GB SSD, 1TB Cloud Storage, Win 11
ProcessorIntel N100, 4 cores up to 3.4GHzMemory4GB LPDDR5Storage128GB SSD plus 1TB cloud storageDisplay15.6-inch Full HD, 16:10, anti-glare, TUV low blue lightSecurityFingerprint reader in the power buttonChargingRapid Charge Boost, 2 hours of use from 15 minutes

If the school runs on Word, Excel and Windows-only software, the IdeaPad Slim 3i is the laptop to buy, and parents agree: it has the highest rating on this page at 4.6 stars from more than 700 owners. Lenovo includes Microsoft Office and 1TB of cloud storage, which makes the 128GB SSD workable, and the 15.6-inch Full HD screen uses a taller 16:10 shape with TUV low-blue-light certification that is easier on eyes during long homework sessions. A fingerprint reader in the power button keeps siblings out, the body passed MIL-STD-810H durability tests, and Rapid Charge gives two hours of use from a 15-minute plug-in. The Intel N100 and 4GB of RAM are enough for schoolwork and streaming, not for heavy software, and the 15.6-inch size suits a middle or high schooler better than a seven-year-old.

Pros
  • Microsoft Office included and Windows 11
  • Full HD 16:10 screen with low-blue-light certification
  • Highest rating here: 4.6 stars from 700 owners
  • MIL-STD-810H durability and Rapid Charge
Cons
  • 4GB of RAM, soldered
  • Intel N100 is a light-duty chip
  • A 15.6-inch laptop is bulkier for a small child

HP 15.6 inch Laptop, HD Touchscreen Display, AMD Ryzen 3 7320U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, AMD Radeon Graphics, Windows 11 Home, Natural Silver, 15-fc0399nr
ProcessorAMD Ryzen 3 7320U, 4 coresMemory8GB LPDDR5Storage256GB PCIe NVMe SSDDisplay15.6-inch HD 1366 x 768 touchscreenGraphicsAMD Radeon integratedOSWindows 11 Home

For a high school student who writes essays, runs a few heavier programs and wants the laptop to still be useful at 18, this HP 15 is the strongest Windows pick on the page. The Ryzen 3 7320U is a real four-core processor, 8GB of RAM is double what the Chromebooks and the Slim 3i carry, and the 256GB NVMe SSD holds a lot of coursework locally. It has a touchscreen, a good webcam with noise reduction for remote classes and long battery life. The screen is 1366 x 768, soft at this size and glossy, which is why it does not rank higher, and Office is not bundled, so budget for a subscription or use the free web versions. More than 1,600 owners rate it 4.4 stars, and many of them bought it for exactly this purpose.

Pros
  • 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, the most capable Windows pick here
  • Touchscreen and a quality webcam with noise reduction
  • 1,600 owners at 4.4 stars
  • Long battery life
Cons
  • 1366 x 768 screen on a 15.6-inch panel
  • Glossy touch panel reflects classroom lights
  • No Office bundled

The Flex 5i Chromebook Plus is what you buy when you want one laptop to last from ninth grade through college. The Intel Core i3-1315U and 8GB of RAM make it two to three times faster than the Celeron and MediaTek Chromebooks, so dozens of tabs, video editing in web apps and Android games are no problem, and the 512GB SSD is enormous by Chromebook standards. The 14-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS touchscreen is bright at 300 nits, the 360-degree hinge turns it into a tablet for reading or drawing, and Google guarantees ChromeOS updates until June 2032, which is the whole of a school career. Gemini AI features are built in. It costs roughly three times the HP Chromebook 14 and weighs more, and it is still ChromeOS, so Windows-only programs are out. More than 1,300 owners rate it 4.3 stars.

Pros
  • Core i3 and 8GB, the fastest Chromebook here
  • 512GB SSD, ten times the storage of the HP Chromebooks
  • Guaranteed ChromeOS updates to 2032
  • 1,300 owners at 4.3 stars; Gemini built in
Cons
  • Costs about three of the budget Chromebooks
  • Heavier than the clamshell Chromebooks
  • ChromeOS still cannot run Windows-only school software

HP’s 2026 Essential 14 is the Windows answer to the budget Chromebook: a light 3.2-pound laptop with a 14-inch anti-glare screen, an Intel N150 processor, Office 365 included and up to 11 hours of video playback. Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, a USB-C port with DisplayPort and AI noise reduction for calls are modern touches for the price, and the dedicated Copilot key will amuse a child for about a day. The limits are the same as the cheap Chromebooks: 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and an HD 1366 x 768 screen with modest color. Windows 11 also asks more of that hardware than ChromeOS does, which is why owners rate it 4.1 stars, the lowest on this page, with slowness the common complaint. Nearly 1,000 have reviewed it. Buy it if the school needs Windows and the budget is tight; otherwise the Lenovo Slim 3i is the better Windows pick.

Pros
  • Office 365 included with Windows 11
  • Light at 3.2 pounds with a 14-inch anti-glare screen
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4
  • Nearly 1,000 owners
Cons
  • 4.1 stars, the lowest rating here
  • 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage
  • HD screen with 62.5 percent sRGB color

This HP 14 is a bundle from a reseller, and for a first laptop that is the point: the box includes a wireless mouse, earbuds, a 500GB portable drive, an HDMI cable and a mouse pad, plus a lifetime Microsoft Office license and Windows 11 Pro, so there is nothing else to buy. The laptop itself is the same class as the HP Essential above, with an Intel N150, 4GB of LPDDR5, 128GB of UFS storage, a 14-inch HD anti-glare screen, Wi-Fi 6 and a 720p camera, and it comes in a lavender finish. Expect the bundled accessories to be basic rather than good. Owners rate it 4.1 stars across 819 reviews, with the usual notes about 4GB of memory feeling slow in Windows. It suits a younger child whose parents want a complete kit, not a teenager with heavy coursework.

Pros
  • Everything a child needs in one box: mouse, earbuds, external drive
  • Lifetime Office and Windows 11 Pro
  • Lavender color kids like
  • 819 owners
Cons
  • 4.1 stars; the bundled accessories are basic
  • 4GB of RAM and a 128GB internal drive

Chromebook or Windows for school?

Ask the school first. If assignments live in Google Classroom, Docs and Slides, a Chromebook is the better tool: it boots in seconds, cannot catch most malware, updates itself, and a 4GB Chromebook feels quicker than a 4GB Windows laptop because ChromeOS is lighter. If the school requires Microsoft Office desktop apps, a specific Windows program or a testing client that does not run on ChromeOS, buy one of the Windows picks, and prefer the HP 15 with 8GB if the budget allows. The Flex 5i Chromebook Plus blurs the line: it is fast enough for everything web-based and runs Android apps, but still cannot install Windows software.

Durability, battery and screens for young eyes

Children drop laptops, so look for low weight and tested builds: the Lenovo Slim 3i and the Lenovo Chromebook at 2.86 pounds are good examples, and the Slim 3i and Essential 15 family passed MIL-STD-810H tests. Battery claims of 11 to 14 hours on the HP Chromebooks and HP Essential 14 mean a school day without a charger. For screens, anti-glare matters more than resolution in a bright classroom, and the TUV low-blue-light certification on the Lenovo Slim 3i is a plus for evening homework. A Full HD panel (Lenovo Chromebook, Slim 3i, Flex 5i) is sharper and worth the small premium for a child who reads a lot on screen.

What about parental controls and accessories?

ChromeOS supports Google Family Link, which lets a parent set screen-time limits, approve apps and filter sites from a phone; Windows 11 has Microsoft Family Safety with similar controls, and the fingerprint reader on the Lenovo Slim 3i keeps siblings off each other’s accounts. Add a padded sleeve for the backpack and, for a Chromebook with 32GB, a microSD card where the slot exists. If the laptop will be used at a desk for long homework sessions, an inexpensive wireless mouse and a pair of headphones for calls make online classes easier.

What age is a Chromebook good for?

From about six or seven, when a child starts using Google Classroom, through middle school. The HP Chromebook 14 is light, cheap and hard to break in software terms. By high school, a faster Chromebook Plus or a Windows laptop with 8GB suits heavier coursework.

Is 4GB of RAM enough for a school laptop?

On ChromeOS, yes, for Classroom, Docs and video. On Windows 11 it is the minimum and feels slow with many tabs, which is why the HP Essential and HP 14 bundle are rated 4.1 stars. The HP 15 touchscreen and Flex 5i have 8GB.

Which school laptop has the longest battery life?

The HP Chromebook 14 models quote up to 13.5 and 14 hours, and the HP Essential 14 quotes 11 hours of video. All of them should last a school day; the gaming-style laptops we excluded would not.

Do these laptops include Microsoft Office?

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i, HP Essential 14 and HP 14 bundle include Office or Office 365. The Chromebooks use free Google Docs or the Office web apps in a browser.

Should I buy a touchscreen for a child?

Younger children who are used to tablets often prefer touch. The Lenovo Chromebook 14, HP 15 and Flex 5i 2-in-1 have touchscreens; the Flex 5i folds flat into a tablet for drawing and reading.
