I love this little rice cooking powerhouse! I had been using a 10 cup Aroma rice cooker, acquired a little before college. It cooked rice well enough, but I could tell it wasn't as nice as restaurant rice. Once I really knew my rice-consumption habits, it's capacity was too big for my normal, everyday needs, and I decided it was time to get something more suitable to my tastes. Let me first say that I really like this thing. It's the height of convenience and simplicity. If you can fill a cup with rice and pour water, you're done. And the timer function is great because you can set it up so that the cooked rice is waiting for you when you get home for dinner.And on top of that, it does steel-cut oatmeal so much better than stovetop. It's a real hassle to tend to steel-cut oats the whole time they're cooking, with the boiling up and having to adjust the moisture and keep stirring and all. It's prohibitive. This cooks rice nicer than our Toshiba. The Toshiba was pretty good but this is a little nicer. The retracting cable is a big convenience. The quick rice takes about 25 minutes full takes about 35-45. Comes out nice. I always use more water than you "should" otherwise it seems to come out a bit firm. My only complaint is that they COULD make the bowl better quality. If anything metal even touches it the finish comes off. You basically can't get a replacement bowl for a reasonable price so it makes the whole thing worthless when the bowl gets damaged. A stainless bowl would make this a 5 star p

My parents would boil rice in water and closely watch it.. and me being into Japan and a Japanese geek - I watched a video of a production plant IN JAPAN (not China!) of them buildling these things... heard they're great and good products from Japan!So for Christmas I bought them this rice cooker and they love it.. they use it all the time.. the intruction manual isn't the best buuuuut.. it's so simple and easy and makes the perfect rice every time.Now if I can just get my parents to prewash their rice first.. sigh..
