Janome 712T Treadle Sewing Machine

I bought this a few months ago as a replacement for the treadle machine I have been using - my great great grandmother's New Companion treadle machine, made by New Home (later Janome) in the early 1900's - as any replacement parts for the old treadle have been difficult to find. The old treadle machine was my first sewing machine, so this was a step up for me. It's super easy to use, easy to thread, just generally a good sewing machine to have. Bought this for a young Amish girl with a treadle and no machine. Her shy smile and speechlessness let me know how thrilled she was. She showed up later at my house with an apron she made for me. The machine itself is built to last, has lots of the latest stitches and works without electricity (although you need some muscle and a treadle).

I bought this 10 years ago. One of the projects required sewing through layers of heavy fabric. The needle passed through all those layers like butter. Have since used it to make a cover for this and another sewing machine, of which both contained layers of piping, interfacing, lining, and fabric. In corners, those layers had to match up with duplicate layers, doubling the thickness. Not a problem for this machine.

You must have a treadle cabinet, I wish new ones were available. I only had to bend one tab on the cabinet I had to install. Should include instructions on properly tensioning the belt, we of a middle age and younger generation have no clue. I am on my third attempt to get it right, however the belt is tight enough to use, just not ideal. Machine has a great stitch. If you have never done it a treadle machine sews more slowly than most electric machines and will wear you out filling the large bobbin, however it is great exercise. I have a Singer cabinet, not another type but the one with SINGER in the metal of the foot pedal base. I was so excited to get the machine set up but boy was I disappointed. The lip under the base of the machine where it sits in the cabinet is too shallow. When put in place the front piece of the cabinet cannot close to hold the machine in. I couldn't find my jig saw so I resorted to using a palm sander to take off more than 1/4" off the front cabinet piece.Also, on the right side of the machine, underneath, there is a plastic skirt. I am very excited as I sew everyday but I am moving up to a new cabin where we will be living off the grid entirely. One thing to be clear is that there is no cabinet or treadle with it. It is just the machine itself. You will need to purchase an old treadle machine and remove the old machine. Great for bargain hunters as you can find a cabinet with an old rusty machine and either tell them you will take it off their hands or can pay a nominal fee and throw away the old
